CC: Who is Them vs Her? Can you give a brief band history?
TVH: Our names are Tim and Sarah, we’re an alternative/indie-rock duo from Long Island, NY. We started writing music together in 2012 after Sarah lost her left pinky toe during a peacock attack at the Bronx zoo. Tim just so happened to be in a gorilla costume and scared it off. We’ve been best friends, life partners and a band ever since.
CC: What artists inspire your sound and lyrics?
TVH: The Dangerous Summer (really wish they didn’t disband!) and Mayday Parade, for their lyrics and vocal melodies. Blink 182 and Secondhand Serenade for their guitar riffs.
CC: Being from New York, do you find it difficult to make a name for yourself in the industry with so many acts playing each and every night?
TVH: We’ve never really thought of it that way but it is a good point. We always did think it was harder to be an alternative band in Long Island because we’re in a scene that’s full of metal or hardcore bands-a sound that we wouldn’t complement in a show. Luckily, over the past year, we did find a few other bands in our area that play in a similar genre as us.
CC: Swing Sets and Handguns has been out for a few months. Have you guys grown even bigger than you thought you would since the release?
TVH: We’ve definitely gained new fans since the release and we’re happy with the response the album’s received. We’ve had a small group of supportive friends since the beginning and they’ve always helped us spread the word. With a good support network in your personal life, it’s easier to get out your name out there to others. But of course, there’s always room to grow…
CC: Who are some of your favorite artists and musicians today?
TVH: Everything from Jewel to Matthew Ryan to Blink 182 to The Wonder Years. Occasionally, Sarah likes head banging to Dying Fetus and Necrotorture too.
CC: Besides music, what are some of your other hobbies?
TVH: Sarah likes reading, annoying Tim, writing, yoga, eating, meditating and on her days off, she faces the dark Lord and always loses. And Tim just likes to sleep. He’s always sleeping.
CC: Describe Them vs. Her in five words.
TVH: My cousin calls us emo.
