Secondborn talks New Orleans, upcoming release, and Pokemon Go

Secondborn - Promo

Concert Crap: You guys have an amazing rock / post hardcore feel to your music. Where do you gather this inspiration from and which current artists influenced you?

Patrick Trumps: Thanks! Being a 6 piece, we have 6 individual (and overlapping) tastes in music. Some guys like the more metal/hardcore bands, some like the classic rock bands, some like just straight up pop music.. So I think our style falls in the overlap there. When this band was started, as I’m sure every band, there was a direction in mind. I think we were more progressive at first but have evolved into what we are today. We’re always a fan of a huge chorus.

CC: What is the best thing about growing up in the New Orleans music scene?

PT: Well our singer, Daniel [Pinner], has some roots in the New Orleans area. Most of us are from Lafayette (2.5 hours west). But, South Louisiana, in general, is such an amalgamation of all kinds of music. New Orleans has the most eclectic music scene, anywhere from jazz and blues, to rock, to zydeco and everything in between. I guess the beauty of all music scenes down here is that you can always stumble upon any type of live music on any given night. It’s incredible.

CC: Your new album is slated for release this year, what can you tell us about it?

PT: I feel it’s just the next progression from our last EP, Symbols. We’re about halfway through it. We’re also still deciding if we want to do another EP or take a little bit longer and do a full length. We have tons of songs in the works. Sometimes it takes longer for some to flesh themselves out than others. Overall, we’re super excited about the next release. We’ve released two music videos so far. One song is a cover of “Take Me Home Tonight” by Eddie Money. The other is one of our songs called “Carrie”. I’m fairly certain we have a third video/song coming out in the next few weeks…at least I hope. HA!

CC: What are some of the best moments you had when creating the album?

PT: I think with this release, we’re getting even more comfortable with the writing styles of each individual. We’re pushing ourselves, both, as musicians and songwriters on this one too. More riffs. Bigger choruses. If you like our previous releases, we think you’ll love this one.

CC: Having six members in Secondborn, do you ever find it difficult to have you all agree on one specific thing when it comes to your music or do you feel that having six members adds fuel to your fire?

PT: Well, with six different opinions you do have a little bit more difficult of a time agreeing on everything. It never gets out of hand though. We all respect each others opinions and ideas. Because we’re also doing all of this ourselves and at our own pace, there’s not definitive timeline to cause any extra friction. We always seem to make it work. It’s not as difficult as it might seem. Haha!

CC: What has been the best thing to happen to you so far in 2016? What are you hoping happens in the rest of 2016 for Secondborn?

PT: 2016 has been good for us. We’ve been playing out more. We’re constantly writing and recording more tunes. Our social media presence is growing. We just hope that we can continue our momentum and expound upon it for the rest of the year. There will be a new record. That’s exciting in itself!!

CC: You guys seem to be loving Pokemon Go. Who is the ultimate Pokemon trainer in the group?

PT: Our manager, Alice, has been crushing it, but her husband, our drummer, Lee [Gauthreaux] is also killing it. I’d say those two for sure. All of us that play it think it’s a pretty cool thing. Outside of our bass player, Alex [Daigle], I think the whole Pokemon thing is new to all of us. Obviously it’s pretty popular so I’m curious to see where it goes from here. But yeah, Lee and Alice for sure.

CC: Is there anything else you would like to say to your fans or anyone that may be reading this interview?

PT: Thanks for giving us the opportunity to answer your questions! If you follow our band in any capacity, you know that we try to be as interactive with our fanbase as possible. If you haven’t heard of us, feel free to check us out on all of our social media pages (FB, Twitter, Instagram, etc). Check out our stuff on iTunes, Google Play, Spotify and all of that too! We can’t wait to get the new record out!
