It was just another day of scrolling endlessly on TikTok when I kept hearing the same tune used for countless videos. It was “Mary On A Cross” by Ghost. The track resurfaced as a trend and became a viral hit on the social media platform nearly three years after its release. Now, let’s get real. I am not a Ghost fan, nor have I ever heard their music. I have seen their merch worn by preteens, so I did not care to give their music a chance. I felt their music might be this generation’s satanic panic judging by their anti-pope apparel. I look back on the nineties era and how music heavily influenced the dissociatives and the anti-socials.
Is satanic panic back after being isolated during the COVID lock down? Are we all feeling a little recluse as an effect? I fell into a rabbit hole researching the band and I finally gave their music a shot. I wanted to know what’s the fuss about the eight nameless ghouls and why this song in particular? Oh boy, I couldn’t be more wrong.
I was in complete shock to hear what was coming out of my speakers. I expected it to sound like something close to Marilyn Manson or among that spectrum. Nope, they sound like if Journey’s “Separate Ways” mixed with “Runaway” by Bon Jovi adding guitar solos similar to Eddie Van Halen and drumbeats like Joe Elliot. How this song was fashioned also reminds me of “Saturday Night” by Misfits. There’s a darker meaning behind the love ballad. Their evocative lyrics make you feel like you’re in another time. I can see why they’re such a popular group with this generation. It sounds like their parents’ music mixed in with Stranger Things. I like it, a lot.
Their sound reminds me of bands like DragonForce and The Darkness. Ironically, Ghost debuted in 2006 when DragonForce’s “Through The Fire and Flames” dropped and became the notorious, challenging song to complete on Guitar Hero 3. It wasn’t until recent years when Ghost became a household name.
I highly suggest Ghost on your playlist.
