Review: Sophie Powers Shines in Debut Single

Sophie Powers releases debut single Lonely Army

Canada’s latest female pop singer export is Sophie Powers. Hailing from Toronto, the sixteen-year-old pop singer just released her debut single, “Lonely Army”, on Set Records.  During the pandemic she has been living in Los Angeles working on new music.  Reflecting on this experience Powers says “In Toronto, I had my parents and friends constantly giving input and telling me what they think about my life. But in L.A. I was left alone with my thoughts. It got quiet.”

Living away from home during these troubled times has permitted her to reach deep inside herself. “Music was my outlet during some really dark times,” Powers says. “If I can be that outlet and help other kids navigate what I went through, that’s all I want as an artist.”

“Lonely Army” embodies the struggles of this younger generation. The last year has been difficult for a lot of individuals, but particularly for youth of the world.  Many have not been able to attend school or interact socially with friends leaving some feeling lonely with a sense of hopelessness. This is something that hasn’t necessarily impacted adults to the same level.  Powers shares, “’Lonely Army’ is an anthemic song. It speaks on behalf of my generation. I want to start a conversation, as it feels adults and people who are not struggling during this time need to understand that almost everyone else is, whether they show it or not.”

“Lonely Army” is a strong debut for the teen from Toronto.  A hint of one of Powers’ musical influences, Avril Lavigne, can be heard in her vocals. While it is way too early to crown Power’s as the next Lavigne, she certainly has the voice and song writing talent to challenge.
