Rammstein Brings Pyro And German Metal To Chicago!

Venue: Soldier Field

September 3rd, 2022: After a 2-year delay (and what felt like forever) due to the Pandemic, Rammstein has finally given a show to Chicago that was well worth the wait and then some. The German metal monsters are currently on a full U.S Tour, their first in over 10 years and they made their presence known in Chicago on Labor Day weekend!

When I entered the stadium and saw the stage set up, it was like nothing I had ever seen from a live show. The stage set up consisted of massive tower-like structures which consisted of a seated elevator contraption. Of course, it wouldn’t be Rammstein if Pyro wasn’t involved, the stage set up also consisted of Pyro which shot up over 60 feet in the air and reached temperatures as hot as 1000 degrees Fahrenheit.

Rammstein rarely tours the United States, and on this run, they made sure to make it count.

The stage takes days to build per show, and over 1,500 tons of Steel to assemble.

Kicking off the show, Rammstein played songs off the new album Zeit, which consisted of “Armee der Tristen” and “Zick Zack”.  They then performed the classics such as “Links 2-3-4” “Sehnsucht” and “Mein Herz brennt”. This then followed up to their creepy track off their self-titled album, “Puppe”. As the show progressed, Rammstein vocalist Till Lindermann came out with a giant-sized baby stroller, in which eventually was set on fire from the inside.

Rammstein continued the show with more songs from the new album and songs from the classic albums. They played the title track of their latest album Zeit in which is a song with a slow build up but eventually comes to an epic conclusion.

This was followed by “Radio” “Mein Teil” and their most iconic song “Du Hast”. The crowd went crazy for all 3 songs, however during the middle part of “Du Hast” there was supposed to be “Line Rockets” that would shoot from the center tower in the middle of the stadium to the stage but those failed to launch, however that did not stop the crowd from continuing to sing and mosh their hearts out! Before going into part 1 of the encore, Rammstein concluded their initial set with “Sonne”.

For the first part of the encore, the band played a piano/stripped down version of “Engel” with opening act Duo Abélard on the B-Stage. This was followed by “Ausländer” “Du Riechst so gut” and “Pussy”. During “Pussy” Till Lindermann rode on a mechanical mobile replica of male…private parts, to keep it PG here 😉

The second and final part of the encore consisted of classic hits such as “Rammstein” “Ich Will” and “Adieu”. The band took a bow, then wrote up their seated elevator tower to give their final waves to the fans before exiting.
