Who: Hippo Campus
Where: Fox Theater, Oakland, California
When: April 8, 2022
On tour for LP3, Hippo Campus’ latest album, fans filled Oakland’s Fox Theater in anticipation to hear how the album would translate to the live stage. Sonically an evolution for the band, LP3 infuses more synth and electronic notes into the bands music than it did before. It’s a style that’s become distinct for Hippo Campus, and LP3 is a natural step for the band (and a huge hit).
Hippo Campus has a deep connection with their fans, and it was obvious from the start. The entire tour has been one sold out show after another, and Oakland was no exception. Fans packed the theater early and by the time Hippo Campus was set to come on the GA Floor section was a sea of people shoulder to shoulder. The crowd screamed as soon as the lights went out and the band came out in a moody blue light to play “2 Young 2 Die,” and they continued to be loud throughout the night as Hippo Campus transitioned into each song in their set.
An incredible band to see live with a humble and impressive stage presence. The group has been together a long time, and it’s clear they put a lot of thought and care into their music and performance. Hippo Campus is all smiles while on stage hearing back their crowd sing the songs they love. And, they make sure every member of the band gets their moment to shine on stage. With little details that differ from the studio track, such as a vocal change or instrument solo, Hippo Campus keeps the show fun with little surprises for themselves and for their audience.
