Joywave Plays a Sold-Out 9:30 Club Show on Their “Cleanse” Tour

After the release of their highly anticipated new album Cleanse, Joywave was finally able to embark on their first tour back since the pandemic. And with a stop at the historic 9:30 Club in Washington, DC, this was a night to remember!

Joe P opened up the show and got the night started off right! He put on a very energetic performance, charming the crowd with his jokes and getting everyone loosened up and dancing along! When performing ‘Color TV’ from his old band Deal Casino, he taught the audience the lyrics and got them to sing along with him. And he closed out his set with his hit song ‘Off My Mind’ which many people in the crowd already knew!

It was time for Joywave to hit the stage! Coming out to roaring cheers, they started out the set with their single ‘Cyn City 2000’; all of them dressed in work jumpsuits to match with the carwash album aesthetic. And with a car heading through a carwash on the back of the stage, (complete with a DC license plate and all!) this band knows theming! Going straight into ‘Buy American’ next, with red, white, and blue lights swirling around the venue, the crowd was already hooked!

Playing a great mixture of both old and new songs throughout the night, at one point lead singer Daniel Armbruster talked about their album Possession, which had the unfortunate timing of being released right at the very start of the pandemic. And in his words, they “shit it directly into a black hole.” Playing ‘Coming Apart’ and ‘F.E.A.R.’ as well as a couple other songs off that album, you could tell the fans were stoked to finally get to hear these songs live!

Nearing the end of the concert, it was time for the encore to end all encores! Joywave came back onstage to cheers and performed ‘Tongues’, getting people all over the crowd to jump around. Then, just about every single band member brought out a bass to play their hit ‘Dangerous’. And now, it was time for the final song of the night! Announcing to the crowd, “are you ready for something truly dangerous?!” Joywave played fan-favorite song ‘Destruction’ not only once, but two times in a row as the crowd lost their minds!
