Charming Liars Explores Loss with Their Latest EP

Alternative artists Charming Liars released EP Sequence 2: The After on Oct 8, 2021.  The three-song EP includes the singles “Afterglow”, “Beautiful Roses”, and “The Haunting”. This is a follow up to the band’s EP Sequence 1: Noise Maker released earlier this year.  All three can be streamed now here: https://dashgo.co/xr9eapm.

Charming Liars was formed when London guitarist Karnig Manoukian and bassist Mike Kruger relocated to Los Angeles in 2013 and hooked up with vocalist Kiliyan Maguire while attending the Musicians Institute in Hollywood. Since forming the band has released four prior Eps: EP Sequence 1: Noise Maker (2021),Bare Bones (2019), 12:31 AM (2016), Delete. Repeat (2015); two live albums: Live 2019 (2019), Sounds of 2020 (2020); and one studio album Thought, Flesh and Bone (2019). The band has toured with The Faim, Angel & Airwaves, and Palaye Royale.

Artists can be inspired by many things including the loss of loved ones.  In EP Sequence 2: The After vocalist Maguire explores loss through different perspectives.  “Afterglow” expresses loss from the one left behind. The question is raised whether the two will ever meet again. It progresses through different stages of grief.

Most of our songs are autobiographical in nature and our new song ‘Afterglow’ is no different,” shares vocalist Kiliyan Maguire. “Earlier this year I had a very close family member pass away from a terminal illness. It was difficult helping them through the process of passing on and going through that process left me with lots of questions.”

He continues: “This song wasn’t written as an answer to those questions but rather a safe place for me to unload what I was feeling. In a way writing this song was how I grieved and I’ll forever be grateful to this piece of music for that. In the end I hope that although this song offers no answers to humanity’s ultimate question, ‘Where do we go after?’ I do hope it can bring comfort to anyone out there who has lost someone as well as be a reminder that they aren’t alone in what they’re going through.”

“The Haunting” turns to the perspective of the one lost.  The spirit lingers, longing to be reunited with the one left behind.  EP Sequence 2: The After closes with an acoustic song “Beautiful Rose”.

Speaking about EP Sequence 2: The After vocalist Kiliyan Maguire shares: “In 2021 I was faced with the passings of two very close people in my life and with those passings came a flood of questions pertaining to what happens after death. Our new E.P. “The After” really allowed me a place to grieve as well as explore the questions these passings brought with them. It’s the first concept piece we’ve ever constructed and I’m extremely proud as well as grateful for the healing process that this record brought with it.

Fans of the band can catch them live this December. They will be playing several dates with The Hunna. Ticket information can be found at www.charmingliars.com/tour.
