CC: Who is Forebear? Can you give a short band history?
MR: We are four diverse musicians who each started working with Scott [Goldbaum] (our guitarist and lead singer) at different times. He was going by the moniker Wise Cub, and we were adding parts to some folkier stuff he was writing. Over time we starting writing together, evolving as we challenged each other. Our music just became its own separate thing, so we decided on a name and kept on working as a band!
CC: Originating in Los Angeles, why is the city and area a good and bad thing for your band and coming up in music?
MR: I think it’s a wonderful thing because there are so many opportunities and very cool venues to play for people. The city exists to help people chase their dreams…so on the other side of the coin, that can work to one’s detriment.
This place is so saturated with musicians that I think event-going people have become spoiled with their options – every night of the week. Having grown up in Kentucky, special live shows weren’t something we had the privilege of going to every single night, much less any and every other form of entertainment we can find here in LA.
You want to prove that your show is worth it – but you’re fighting 15 other band’s shows, 4 improv shows, some art gallery showing, and trying to talk someone into driving through traffic to get to you.
CC: Your release Good God is out August 26. How long have you guys been working on this release?
MR: Some of the songs took months to write, while another song ended up ready to lay down in a couple of days. It’s funny how that works. We recorded the album in about two weeks in Seattle at London Bridge Studios. We spent a lot of time on pre-production so that we knew exactly what we were getting into when we got there.

CC: What are some of your most memorable moments creating it?
MR: I remember Nick’s guitar solo on the title track “Good God”. It was such a cool moment because it was just so genuinely improved, but the perfect take. I remember having an intense late-night argument over whether we should take out some vocals at the end of our song “Little Foot”. And I remember our producer’s little girls coming by and giving the vibes energy and joy when we might start losing it.
CC: Can we expect a music video any time soon?
MR: We’re working on it!
CC: What has been your favorite Los Angeles venue to play and why?
MR: My favorite spot is the Bootleg. Great sound, crowds who come and support. And there’s a a cool room behind the stage for people to go and hang out, so it’s more than just a room with a stage.
CC: If you could switch places with another musician, who would you pick and why?
MR: That’s such a great and loaded question, so I’ll go with the first person that came to mind and that’s Kaela Sinclair, M83’s keyboardist/singer. I recently saw them perform and I was blown away by her presence. Even though there’s no viola/violin, I really respond to the music they’re putting out and the show they’re putting on. It would be amazing to take part in that! Plus, if she replaced me in Forebear she’d be adding lots and lots of points to our band and I don’t think the guys would complain.
CC: Anything else you’d like to say to your fans or anything reading this interview?
MR: You’re not a thing, you’re a person. And I hope our music makes you feel something.
