Some of the best shows are the ones where you can get up close and personal with the band. As a fan, those experiences are amazing and unforgettable, but as a photographer, they can also be very challenging. The Majestic in Madison, Wisconsin is one such venue where how close you can get is a mixture of your determination and how early you get through the door. At 99% of the shows, there is no barricade. This can make for a real challenge if you want to get upfront to get certain shots.
MisterWives are one of those bands that are full of energy and love to interact with their fans. April 28th, 2018 was my first time seeing them, and wow was it a great time. Up until then, I hadn’t really listened to them, but after that night I can say I became a fan. Right from the get-go, Mandy Lee and the rest of the band came bursting out on stage and didn’t let up until they finished their show over an hour later.
My best memory from that night was capturing one photo in particular though. Like I mentioned earlier, getting up close for photos can be a real challenge, but I managed to get pretty close in the crowd and just happened to be in the perfect spot at the perfect time. Mandy went out into the crowd and was singing face to face with one of their fans. At that moment that fan looked like she was absolutely in heaven. Luckily for me, I was just a couple of feet over and brought my camera up as quickly as I could to grab the shot. I only had a couple of seconds but I managed to nail it. To this day that shot is still one that I think about and am so glad I was able to capture.
I can’t recommend catching a MisterWives show enough if they’re ever in your town. I’ve seen them once since that night and hope I get to see them again when they come to town this winter.
