Flight Club released their debut album on July 30thUntil The Sun Drowns is their first full-length album on Open Your Ears Records. The band has released three previous EPs, Flight Club (2015), Kinda Funny (2017) and Recreational Love (2019) which was recorded shortly after signing with the music label.

The Richmond, VA based rock band got their start performing in clubs while attending Virginia Commonwealth University. After touring the Midwest and East Coast, the band signed with Richmond based Open Your Ear Records. They subsequently released their Recreational Love EP which was produced by Alan Day from Four Year Strong. This band along with the Foo Fighters were major influences for Flight Club.

Covid-19 prevented the band from touring during 2020. This break allowed them to focus on their first album, Until The Sun Drowns.  The band started releasing videos from the album starting in September 2020 with “Adolescence” being the first.  This was followed by “Dust Bunny”, “Comeback”, “I’ve Been Kick Out of Better Homes Than This”.

A week prior to the album’s official release the band released their latest song, “High Roller”. Speaking on the new single, vocalist Charlie Mahoney shares: “With ‘High Roller,’ we wanted to make a song that felt like a late night. Something fun but with a bit of attitude to get you feeling yourself.

For us, Until The Sun Drowns was the opportunity to explore so many of the influences that we wanted to touch on as a band, without sacrificing songs or styles to fit the mold of what our genre “should” sound like,” shares guitarist Sam Tucker. “We hope anyone who listens to this record can hear the freedom of creativity that we felt working on each song. There’s truly something for everyone on this album and we hope it can speak to you as a whole.

Until The Sun Drowns did not impress me much on first listen. I found myself skipping through the songs with nothing catching my ear. However, it’s a good thing I tend to listen to an album multiple times before writing a review. The more I listened to it, the more it grew on me.  It reminded me of my first exposure to The Beatles.  It took three times listening to Meet The Beatles before getting hooked and the band becoming my all-time favorite.

At times Until The Sun Drowns seems like a rock album and at other times it sounds more pop-punk. There are terrific opening bass lines from Alex Triantafiledes and vicious down strumming guitars by Sam Tucker.  Vocalist Charlie Mahoney possesses a distinctive voice which resonates through the songs. The break from touring must have infused new energy into the band because this is the band’s best work to date.

Don’t make the mistake I almost made.  Give the album a listen and see if it grows on you like it did me.
