The Ansible Change Direction with Existing to Repeat

The Ansible

The Ansible released their Existing to Repeat EP, on November 5th.  This is the Austin, TX progressive metal band’s first release since the 2019 Forever album. Band members include Greg Hinck (Guitar, Bass, Keyboard, Programming), Derril King (Vocals), Nigel Summers (Bass, Keyboard), Darian Hatcher (Drums), and newcomer Mark Martinez (Guitar).

There are bands that have softened their sound with time, for example Metallica drifting away from its early thrash metals sound. Songs on The Ansible’s previous albums typically blended clean melodic vocals with screaming dirty vocals with a hardcore sound.  Existing to Repeat is a departure from this style taking the band in a more rock direction. They have dialed back the aggressive guitars and vocals to appeal to a larger audience.

The EP’s first song “From Here, We Fade” explores doubts in the band. Covid-19 has caused a lot of people to take a step back and re-evaluate their lives. Some have changed jobs or decided not to re-enter the workforce. Relationships have either moved closer or fallen apart. Doubts have infiltrated many people’s minds including the band. Maybe it was these doubts that resulted in the bands change in direction.

The band describes “Lets Drop” as “The fun party song of the album. Most of us work jobs we don’t like and have negative situations to deal with in life. For us, there is an unparalleled sense of relaxed freedom when we pile in the van that lets our regular lives wash away. Hitting the road, laughing, creating and dreaming is the best, so we put it in a song.”

“Timeslide” is the one song on the EP that goes back to the band’s roots with King’s screaming vocals and rapid-fire guitar rhythms.  The Ansible says “While stuck in quarantine, Greg read A LOT of comics! Specifically a lot of X-Men and X related comics. There are a lot of convoluted stories involving time travel and attempting to change the future by changing the past.  It almost never ends well, but we like to dream.  The title is a reference to our favorite time traveling mutant Cable.  This song also features heavy contributions from Nigel, who not only holds down the low end but also creates all the synth, extra percussion and general ambient sound design in our music.  We let rip with the Pitchfork pedal to go even lower in the breakdown.  We cannot wait to play this live.”

The Ansible is heading in the right direction with their latest release. The EP still maintains some level of their metal roots but also adds a little more diversity than previous albums. It is more of a rock album, sounding almost indie at times.
