Song Review : Ollie Gabriel – “Running Man”

EmilynnRoseOllie Gabriel April 37305

Indie pop / soul singer Ollie Gabriel is from a small town in Louisiana, he grew up in a musical family, listening to the greats of soul music. Listening to his parents’ records is how his love for music came about. Gabriel developed a pretty wide ranging taste in music, enjoying everything from Curtis Mayfield to Metallica and Tupac. He says that “It is the diversity that has made me into the artist that I am today.”

“Running Man” is a really fun song. The track begins with a keyboard and a clap track in the background. It’s a really upbeat sounding song and that ties in well with the theme, which is following your dreams and overcoming obstacles. You can hear the soul influence in the song when you listen to how Gabriel sings, there’s a lot of power behind his voice.

The music video features a Paralympic athlete named Blake Leeper who was born missing the lower parts of his legs. He’s been using prosthetics since he was 9 months old. At the 2012 Paralympic Games in London, Leeper won a silver and a bronze medal in two different sprints. The story of Leeper is perfect and really shows what the theme of the song is about.

“Running Man” is a very positive song that shows pays homage to where Ollie Gabriel came from and what he believes in. Listening to this song should encourage anyone with a dream to not give up.
