Romes talk new music, Drake cover, growing in Toronto, and more

Romes - Promo

Concert Crap: Romes have been compared to “a modern day Duran Duran”. What are your thoughts when you hear something like that?

Romes: Duran Duran is a great band, and they’ve written some massive songs, but we never grew up listening to them. It’s funny, because we’re being compared to a band who aren’t a direct influence. But that being said, there are a lot worse comparisons out there!

CC: Your Believe EP has been out for a few months. What has been the feedback since its release?

Romes: We’re delighted with the reaction so far. The song is a statement, and it’s about positivity and self-belief. With everything that’s going on in the world, “Believe” can serve to remind people that it’s not all doom and gloom at the moment. We’re being tested, but it’s nothing that we can’t overcome.

CC: What has been the best thing to happen to ROMES since its release?

Romes: There isn’t one thing in particular that comes to mind. We’re just really appreciative of everything going on right now and of all the people constantly supporting us. Every week there’s another thing that comes our way. The gigs are getting bigger and better and it feels amazing.

CC: How is it growing your band in Toronto?

Romes: It’s a great city with a vibrant music scene. It’s a real melting pot of artists so it feels like there’s always an emphasis on creativity. It’s great.

CC: You guys just put out a cover of Drake’s song “One Dance”. Why did you decide to cover this song and artist in particular? What has been the overall feedback to it?

Romes: While we’re setting up the release for our full-length album early next year, we’re constantly working on new ideas. We wanted to record a cover and keeping it close to Toronto, decided on “One Dance”.

The best covers to us are the ones where the covering artist really makes the cover their own. The whole vibe for our version of “One Dance” came about really naturally.

CC: What does the rest of 2016 hold for ROMES?

Romes: At the moment we’re just down in our basement rehearsing every day.

We’re always experimenting with ways to step up our live show.

We’ve got a couple shows in Detroit and Chicago in a couple weeks and then we’ll be itching to get out on a full tour.

CC: Is there anything else you would like to say to your fans or anyone that may be reading this interview?

Romes: We hope to see you soon in a city near you.

All questions answered by the entire band: Jacob Alexander, Nicolas Amadeus, James Tebbitt and Andrew Keyes.
