Review: The Coyote Takes Listeners Back to the Golden Age of Radio with Bad Killer EP

The Coyote releases Bad Killer EP

Prepare to be transported back in time with Bad Killer, the new EP by The Coyote which was released on December 3rd. It is the brainchild of writer and composer Elan Levy.  The EP was influenced by Levy’s upbringing which was shared between an American suburb on the Western coast and a Native American reservation on the Mexican border.

Bad Killer is a nostalgia work of music that is reminiscent of the glory days of radio when families would huddle around the radio and listen to serials like the Lone Ranger and Perry Mason. If the EP was a movie or television show it would be in black and white rather than in color.  It felt strange listening to it over a streaming service with it seeming more appropriate for AM radio or a record spinning on a turntable.

The Coyote shares: “Bad Killer has run as a mystery radio series from 1956 until now… brought to the silver screen by The Coyote Pictures of Hollywood, CA. It is one helluva ghost story — set on a haunted frontier in the West, where the prairie meets the coast. With each twist and turn is an invitation to live the dream and dream the nightmare. Full of rumbling engines and spooked horses on the run, its soundtrack stakes new claims in a bonanza of 1950’s and 60’s classics. Charged with the threat of the Bad Killer and narrated by The Coyote, whose melodies are as commanding as they are vulnerable, the tale ‘ere told is in a whisper and a bang!”

This is one of the more interesting albums of the year. It flows like a radio episode from the fifties which uses spoken dialogue to build anticipation for the listener for the songs to follow. The vocals are in a traditional pop style with interesting rhythms ranging from doo wop sounds of the ‘50s to galloping surf music tones from spaghetti westerns of the sixties. It makes you want to sit back, close your eyes, and use your imagination to visualize the storyline being told throughout the EP.

I have never been one to be constrained by musical generation gaps. Good music is good music regardless of when it was created and what style of music it embodies. Bad Killer is a unique, interesting nostalgic piece of work by The Coyote that stimulates the imagination. Will it be fully appreciated by today’s generation? I’m not sure, but I never would have expected Billie Eilish to become a huge success with her style, so who knows. Maybe the fact that Bad Killer is so unique will attract listeners who are looking for something different.
