Review: State Champs Release Best New Pop Punk Album of 2022

State Champs is back just in time for summer with their fourth studio album, Kings Of The New Age. The album was released on May 13 via Pure Noise Records. Leading up to the album’s release, the New York pop punk band released the singles “Eventually”, “Everybody but You (ft. Ben Barlow)”, “Outta My Head” and “Just Sound”. The album includes guest appearances by Ben Barlow (Neck Deep), Chrissy Costanza (Against The Current), country pop singer Mitchell Tenpenny, and pop punk band Four Year Strong.

What goes better with summer than some brand-new pop punk music? After being cooped all winter, there is nothing like throwing off the jacket, jumping in the car and taking a cruise with friends. Kings Of The New Age is the perfect remedy for shedding those winter blues. It is filled with catchy choruses that make you want to roll down the windows and sing along with the band. The guitar riffs have those trebly tones with just the right amount of bite to them. The lyrics touch on relationship issues to which anyone over the age of 13 can relate.

Speaking about the album the band shares, “Kings of The New Age is our fourth album, the one that we spent the most time on, and the one that makes the biggest statement. After writing over 30 songs, we narrowed it down to 11 that best represent our mission as a band, and sonically, match the energy level we wanted to captivate heading into this new chapter.”

They continue: “Lyrically, KOTNA is a reflection on the past few years during a very weird time. However, it is also a reminder that we’re only here for so long. Although we will always live and learn by trial and error in areas like friendships, family, careers, relationships, etc, there’s no time for toxicity and negativity when a certain opportunity presents itself. Never waste a moment that can be seized. Times are changing, culture is evolving, and we’re happy to provide the soundtrack and let you know that we’re Here To Stay. Welcome to The New Age.“

Whenever a new album comes out, I’m always looking for that one track that sticks out the most to add to my playlist. The song that I will obsess with over the ensuing weeks. “Everybody but You” is undoubtedly that track from Kings Of The New Age. It’s catchy and combines great dynamics with plenty of attitude. The band shares, “Lyrically, ‘Everybody But You’ reflects on the back and forth of an overly toxic relationship, and after all that exhaustion, what better way to move on from someone than throwing a massive party with your friends? We also were heavily involved with the creative side of the music video treatment and direction in which we had a lot of fun portraying the concept and message of the song (and partying.)

Kings of The New Age is the best pop punk album of 2022 so far.  The album zips right along at just under 35 minutes making it an easy listen if you have a short commute to work or school. It contains no weak songs that make you want to hit the skip button. Most importantly it accomplishes what every pop punk should, get the adrenaline rushing.

The album can be purchased/streamed here. State Champs is also on tour this summer with dates in Europe and the US. Tickets can be purchased here.
