Review | Photos: Flume enchants the Masonic Temple in Detroit

Detroit is the birthplace of techno, if you didn’t know. Electronic music is part of the history of the city
itself and something that always puts the asses in the seats. You might think that being just days
removed from Detroit’s annual Movement Music Festival that takes place every Memorial Day weekend
that people would be a little burnt out, but that was not the case at the Masonic, the Temple was
packed full of EDM worshipers.

Flume hit the road at the end of May to venture around the country after having recently released his
fourth studio album, Palaces, on the 20 th and the crowd was set to hear it. Luckily for the crowd they
didn’t have to wait as Flume took the stage 15 minutes earlier than expected, and when he did, things
got crazy. Greeting the crowd dressed the kind of suit you’d see a motorcycle racer wearing adorned
with makeshift product sponsors like “Vasectormax” and “Greenpeas,” something maybe wouldn’t have
been picked up so easily form the crowd.

Flume opened his set taking the bike theme a bit further with a single spinning wheel on the giant
screen behind him. As the RPM’s ramped up the sounds transitioned into the opening song, “The
Difference,” a recent collab with Toro y Moi. He followed this up with a new track off Palaces in
“Escape” and then rolled right into his remix of Disclosure’s now almost-decade-old “You and Me,”
something that I don’t think the crowed was expecting quite so early in the set, at least based on the
eruption of screams from that came along with the first few beats.

As the set went on white arches began to move around the stage (aided by some well hidden people),
for the time being, ended up behind Flume. It was a fun visual element that added to the ever changing
and psychedelic scenes taking place on the screen behind him. Transitions between songs were done so
well that if it weren’t for the lack of bass sometimes you may not even notice the track was switched on
you all while playing songs from each of his 3 albums and various singles finishing his set with 2015’s
“Some Minds.” That was before a 3 song encore including “Love Light,” “Helix,” and Flume’s remix of
Lorde’s “Tennis Court.”

Flume puts on an incredible show, and with 31 tracks dropped during one night, you have plenty to give
you your fix. The US Palaces tour goes on throughout the end of September with a handful of festivals
along the way. Don’t skip on this one!
