If there was ever a match made in heaven, or hell in this case, it would have been Halloween night for Queens of the Stone Age at the Forum in Los Angeles. The ghouls, monsters and freaks were out for this special engagement that also marked the “End of the Road” for the band’s final show for their latest album “…Like Clockwork.”
QOTSA was ready to take the stage, and sticking with the theme of the evening, they hit the stage with “The Exorcist” theme song. The floor was packed with people and everyone shouted throughout the band’s performance.
Puffs of smoke were spread throughout the arena from people smoking. The smell of marijuana flooded the arena. It was hard to avoid it. From high above, one could see flames from people taking a quick hit during the band’s performance.
There were no tour dates for the band before or after this show because this was such an exclusive engagement. Having it be their one and only show for awhile did not seem to phase anyone in the band nor in attendance.
Homme said a couple of times that this would be the band’s final show for a really long time and even said “We’ll see you in a couple of years,” sending shock and awe throughout the audience.
The band played songs spanning much of their discography, including songs that they haven’t played in 10 years. Former member of the band, Nick Oliveri, made an appearance during the band’s encore. Adding devil horns to his head, he helped sing the next five songs for the band during their six song encore. This is probably the last time that this little reunion would happen and it was a great treat to those who saw.
QOTSA started a little than usual for a concert time at 10:35. They made up for the late appearance by play past midnight and sending fans home happy with a 95-minute performance.
Nick Oliveri’s Uncontrollable opened the show. JD McPherson followed and then The Kills. In between setting up for the bands was a costume contest, in which two people dressed as characters from Bob’s Burgers won. Also filling in on the downtime between bands was the Suicide Girls, dressing in scantily clad outfits and stripping down to almost nothing by the end of their dances.
Festivities began even before doors to the venue opened. There was a haunted house, carnival games and even a mariachi band playing throughout, all on the outside of the venue.
The only real negative was for attendees who had to pay $20-$25 for parking. This took away from fans buying merchandise or a couple of drinks for the evening. The venue should really downgrade this price.
