Photos / Review: Welcome to the Taylordome – Taylor Swift at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida

Who: Taylor Swift

Where: Hard Rock Stadium, Miami, Florida

When: August 18, 2018

A Taylor Swift concert is many things: singing, dancing, costume changes, and giant inflatable snakes. Two things that it is most certainly not: about you, and here to remind you of what is going on in the real world.

When Ms. Swift rolled into the steamy confines of Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium on August 18, there was political chaos and turmoil in America, most emanating from Washington, D.C. One would be forgiven to have forgotten this that Saturday night inside the venue.

For nearly two hours following an intro of Joan Jett’s “Bad Reputation,” there wasn’t the slightest dose of reality to be found. As Ms. Swift, with assistance from Charli XCX and local product Camila Cabello ran through nineteen songs, primarily from the “Reputation” album, it was all about her. There were no mentions of anything unrelated to pop culture, no political discourse, no mentions of #MeToo, nothing but Ms. Swift. This was probably a welcome break from headlines for most people in attendance.

The crowd, primarily young girls, some with parents in tow, were dressed in homemade Taylor Swift t-shirts, glitter and miniature angel wings, were on their feet all evening as Ms. Swift performed the hits from Reputation as well as two from 1989 and one from Fearless. There were several medleys including the show ending “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together / This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things”. The songs spoke of redemption of reputation, some of sexuality, and of being in love, all while a one hundred foot video screen broadcast video that was probably visible on  Mars as more than a dozen dancers gyrated around Ms. Swift, at times holding her aloft.

Ms. Swift’s opening acts, Charli XCX and Ms. Cabello hung around long enough after performing to join Ms. Swift for her hit “Breathless” instead of heading to the tour bus. As on every other stop on this tour, there were acoustic numbers, “Dancing With Our Hands Tied” and for the first time live, “Breathe”. Ms. Swift also performed a gorgeous medley of “Long Live” / “New Year’s Day” on an oversized and bedazzled piano.

At the end of it all there was a lot to endure, but what there wasn’t, was a reality. For two plus hours you were sequestered away in the Taylordome, and that alone was worth the price of admission.
