Photos / Review: High and Low Festival, featuring Brand New, brings indie rock to the Inland Empire

High and Low Fest brought a wide variety of indie and alternative acts to San Bernardino, however, the event that had everyone talking for weeks to come was Brand New’s performance.

Brand New Plays New Songs Off Of Highly Anticipated Release Science Fiction

After shocking fans internationally with the leak and immediate dope of their highly anticipated fifth full length, Brand New left the crowd in awe as they played many songs from Science Fiction for the first time ever live.

The set started off with “Lit Me Up” and continued as an elaborate roller coaster of emotion.

What was very odd of Brand New’s performance was their stage setup. It is not uncommon for bands to play live with a LED scree behind them, however, Brand New also played with a transparent screen in front of them as well.

The intentions to the front LED display are still unknown, however, the screen did portray several animations as the band played some of their most well known songs.

Upcoming Indie Rock Acts Collide With Alternative Legends

Although Brand New was arguably the stars of the festival, they were not the main draw.

Bands such as Death Cab For Cutie, Tegan and Sara and Best Coast also drew large crowds for their sets.

In addition, many upcoming acts got the chance to play with the previous mentioned bands. Bands such as Now, Now, Bad Suns and Coin all grew up aspiring to ply music like Death Cab For Cutie and Brand New. This made the event more special at it came “full circle” for these upcoming artists.

Something For Everyone

What made High and Low Fest unique, aside from all the bands that played and the location of the festival, the event had food choices that could fit anyone’s dietary needs.

The festival showcased traditional foods that a person may normally find at a music event such as burgers, burritos and pizza.

What made this festival stand out was it’s wide variety of contemporary healthy foods including a poké bowl truck, fruit stands, a kombucha bar, a smoothie bar and all other sorts of fusion cuisine.

What Went Wrong

Although the festival was a good time overall, it was still not without its flaws. Unfortunately, due to technical difficulties, both stages fell behind schedule.

In “indoor hanger” stage was affected more as this stage fell 40 minutes behind schedule by the end of the night.

Tegan and Stage, whom played the main stage, also had to cut their sets short due to unknown causes.

In the end, the festival was a huge success and will be a day long remembered by all whom attended.
