Who: 2022 Summer Tour: Collective Soul & Switchfoot; Jade Jackson

Where: The Fillmore Silver Spring, Silver Spring, MD

When: August 2, 2022

The hottest spot in Silver Spring this August wasn’t just because the A/C was (allegedly) failing. From start to finish, Switchfoot and Collective Soul scorched The Fillmore’s stage! Read on to find out how these cross-country co-headliners lifted the weight of the “Heavy” humidity, just short of saying “Hello Hurricane!”

Jade Jackson

In contrast to the two high-energy headliners, country singer-songwriter Jade Jackson opened the show with mellow acoustic numbers. Playing solo for most of her set, Jackson won over the audience with her soothing, soulful vocals. Songs such as “You” and her stripped-down cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “Dancing in the Dark” made The Fillmore feel more like the Grand Ole Opry!

Switchfoot

When Jade Jackson passed the mic to Switchfoot, it might as well have been a torch! The San Diego surfers turned up the heat straightaway with opener “Take My Fire,” and kept the temperature up for the entire set!

While Switchfoot are known for their exciting live performances, nothing compares to being a few feet away from lead singer Jon Foreman’s… well, feet! All of the audience members on the rail watched as the barrier turned into a tightrope, halfway through the band’s faithful cover of Beastie Boys’ “Sabotage.” Jon did this twice during the cover, with the second balancing act ending with a jump into the crowd itself!

As the set continued, Switchfoot blazed on! Promising to make this (and every) night unique, Jon brought up a fan named Eli on-stage, who claimed he could shred with the rest of the band on the song “Dark Horses.” To the surprise of the entire venue, Eli more than backed up his claim! More special moments included a flood of bubbles into the room, plus an acoustic, quintet vocal on one mic for “Hello Hurricane.”

The crowd were in a full frenzy by the time the band (with Tim Foreman on bass, Chad Butler on drums, Jerome Fontamillas on keys/rhythm guitar, and touring member Boaz Roberts on lead guitar) closed their set with the classic hit “Meant to Live.” Without a doubt, the quintet made an unforgettable night for everyone in the room.

Collective Soul

With possibly the highest humidity levels ever experienced inside The Fillmore Silver Spring, Collective Soul had quite the task ahead of them! Arming themselves with their hottest riffs and the coldest water bottles they could find to toss into the audience, the Atlanta quintet took the stage.

As the beat to “Precious Declaration” began, lead singer Ed Roland, rhythm guitarist Dean Roland, bassist Will Turpin, drummer Johnny Rabb, and lead guitarist Jesse Triplett kept their cool. Shockingly, the excess humidity did cause Ed’s mic stand to slip from his grip during “Heavy,” as the mic made quite the thud. Nonetheless, he shrugged it off and continued his one-of-a-kind freestyle dance moves!

The closer it got to midnight, the more free water bottles were being passed down and around by venue staff to the audience. However, the humid night couldn’t dampen the partying spirit! During a duet with Jade Jackson for a cover of “The One I Love” by fellow Atlanta natives, R.E.M, Jon Foreman popped up with a birthday cake for Ed! The stage soon turned into a cake-tasting ceremony, with Ed delivering servings to all on-stage, as well as giving the majority of the cake to the front row.

Leaving the room begging for more, Collective Soul wisely stuck to their recent favorite closing song, “Run.” The five men strolled off stage while conducting the crowd to sing along, with Will Turpin even including unofficial sign language for the lyrics! Only these two bands could make for such an unforgettable night, even as the venue turned into a sauna!
