Photos | Review: All Time Low Brings Their Side Summer Tour To Norfolk

You know it’s bound to be a very special concert when it’s the venue’s first show back since the pandemic, and what a special night it was! Following alongside their Sad Summer Fest shows, All Time Low decided to add a Side Summer tour to hit the cities they weren’t bringing the festival to make sure these places got a little love. With The Maine and Grayscale opening up for these shows, you already know the concert was going to be unforgettable. And with a sold out show meaning a packed and sweaty crowd, this night was one to remember!

The concert started out strong with the first opener of the night, Grayscale. They treated the audience to a combination of songs from their brand new album Umbra to some of their older hits, beginning with ‘Dirty Bombs’ and heading straight to ‘In Violet’. When they played their hit song ‘Babylon (Say It To My Face)’, it was clear the entire crowd knew the words, singing along with the band! As any great, high energy opener will do, they had the crowd loosened up and hyped, ready for what’s next to come.

The Maine took to the stage, hooking the crowd within seconds as they walked out onstage to ‘Sweet Caroline’ by Neil Diamond blasting through the venue’s speakers, nearly as loud as the crowd singing along to it. They started out their set with the opening track ‘Sticky’ from their latest album, and performed quite a few more songs off that record. A fun thing happened mid-set, when a fan managed to get their vinyl record of XOXO: From Love & Anxiety In Real Time up to the stage with the help of fellow audience members to be signed by the band. And sign it they did! The audience assisted once again, passing it back to the owner. Throughout their set they kept the crowd engaged, getting people to jump, scream, and even sing ‘All Star’ by Smash Mouth! Their set had no shortages of fun, and everyone loved it when the band hit them with their throwback song, ‘Everything I Ask For’.

It was now finally time for the night’s headliner: the band everyone’s been waiting for! After a brief intro of what sounded like a cheery telemarketer having an existential crisis on your voicemail, All Time Low hit the stage to a frenzied crowd. With as many albums as All Time Low has, they made sure to leave no era unrepresented on the setlist! Starting off strong with ‘Some Kind Of Disaster’ off their latest record, they seamlessly transitioned to ‘Dark Side Of Your Room’ and then into the crowd pleaser ‘Six Feet Under The Stars’. When the set slowed down for a few songs, people held up their phone lights for ‘Therapy’, and rocked back and forth, some even arm in arm, for ‘Missing You’. Every now and then, they’d break up their songs with some banter between lead singer Alex Gaskarth and guitarist Jack Barakat, much to the amusement of the crowd. Alex a one point noted that, despite how hot and sweaty it was in the venue that night, Jack’s hair still looked perfect, which it did!

When the band briefly left the stage before their encore, the crowd cheered and screamed for them to come back onstage and perform more music for everyone. After a reappearance from the telemarketer voice, All Time Low jumped back onstage for their final two songs. They performed one of their latest hits ‘Monsters’ to a pumped crowd, and closed out the concert in the best way they can, with everyone’s favorite ‘Dear Maria, Count Me In’! With the crowd screaming every single word back at the stage and dancing all around, the energy in the room was infectious.

With such an incredible show behind them, All Time Low, The Maine, and Grayscale have the rest of their summer tour to look forward to. But the people of Norfolk will definitely remember this sold-out foray back into the world of live music.
