Who: Mike Shinoda, Don Broco

Mike Shinoda is a name that is known worldwide thanks to Fort Minor and Linkin Park. Despite that, I was hesitant to head all the way out to Boston on a Wednesday that ended up being the coldest night of the season but was very glad that I did.

Opener Don Broco is a band that I have been following for a couple of years now. Technology, released in February, is one of the best albums released this year and the British band has been steadily growing a following in the US thanks to their time supporting Our Last Night early this year and their time on Vans Warped Tour this summer. They are known for their high energy sets and this time around was no exception. They opened with “Everybody” and continued their set with “Automatic,” “Pretty,” “You Wanna Know,” “Nerve,” and “Come Out To L.A.” The anthemic “T-Shirt Song” rounded out their set that was much too short. Singer and frontman Rob Damiani is an expert at connecting with the audience and is an excellent live singer. Guitarist Simon Delaney jumps and skips around the stage and executes several kicks throughout the set. Bassist Tom Doyle keeps his side of the audience thoroughly entertained. Drummer Matt Donnelly does not hide from the audience, despite being situated in the back, and his backing vocals mesh perfectly with Damiani’s lead vocals. Don Broco is bound to continue growing their audience in the United States and it will not be long before they are headlining and selling out arenas.

I never got the chance to see Linkin Park, so seeing Mike Shinoda was an experience. His setlist was a great combination of Linkin Park, Fort Minor, and original songs. “Petrified” from Fort Minor, “I.O.U.,” and Linkin Park’s “When They Come For Me” got the show started on the right foot. “World’s On Fire,” Linkin Park’s “Roads Untraveled,” “Make It Up As I Go,” Linkin Park’s “Iridescent,” and “Ghosts” kept the night moving. Shinoda very obviously knows his way around a stage and knows what the audience wants. He expertly transitioned from singing with a microphone at the front of the stage to performing with a guitar to playing the keys. He is an excellent musician who thought about the audience before he put together a setlist. Unfortunately, as excellent as the show was, the reality of attending a show on a Wednesday night hit and I had to leave early, so I did not get to see him perform songs like “Numb” or “Heavy.” I also missed Don Broco joining him on stage to finish out the night with “A Place For My Head.” Mike Shinoda is an artist I will absolutely see again, no matter what songs he is performing, and I will stay all the way to the end next time.
