Photos: Bleachers moves their audience in Portland, Oregon

Who: Bleachers

Where: Roseland Theater, Portland, Oregon

When: October 3, 2017

Bleachers, led and fronted by the multitalented Jack Antonoff, returned to Portland for a dynamic and powerful set Bleachers shows are known for. Jack Antonoff is a grammy award winning musician and producer, writing and producing for artists such as Lorde, Taylor Swift, Sara Bareilles, Tegan and Sara, and more. He is also a former member of the bands Steel Train and fun.

A Bleachers show is unlike any other. As Jack describes midway through the show, music is an outlet he uses to escape the world and provide his life with purpose and happiness. He repeatedly cuts in and out a low electronic hum over the Roseland’s speakers to describe his point: when the hum isn’t on the room is silent, boring, and sad, but when the hum is playing it brings life into the room and the audience can physically feel the hum in their chest. Jack describes coming home from his daily life, putting on headphones, and hearing that noise while he first began and wrote songs for Bleachers. He wrote these dark and somber songs, but pictured recording and playing them onstage in a completely different manner. Masking the songs with huge arrangements and production, playing the stage with two drum sets, a full band, and surrounded by his best friends. Picturing an audience singing back at him while bringing his art and vision to life.

A Bleachers show is unlike any other concert experience. Jack’s writing is distracted by the large production behind the song. Jack captivates and has complete control over the crowd, allowing them to erupt in singing and dancing during upbeat songs like “Wild Heart.” He has the ability to immediately break the crowd and move them to tears, such as during his song “Wake Me,” a lone cover of Tom Petty’s “American Girl,” and a slowed, stripped back version of “Like a River Runs.”
