MOTHERMARY Resurrects Into Your New Essential Dark Synthwave Duo

Ethereal? Check. Dark and captivating? Check. Sensual and elusive? Check. MOTHERMARY are ready for you to join their cult — erm, religion — and escape your daily stressors into an electro-dreamland. They have worked hard to break free of the binding of their past and gift you a musical getaway from reality.

The youngest of eleven siblings, identical twins Larena and Elyse grew up in a strict Mormon family in Montana. Larena reflects on their upbringing saying, “we were brainwashed” — which ultimately led to Elyse breaking out of the smothering environment on her own. She taught herself music production before Elyse also left Montana and reconnected with her in New York. Together, Larena and Elyse have created a spiritual and dark electropop vibe that sounds a little retro, yet modern and uplifting at the same time. The name MOTHERMARY is derived from religion’s controversial being herself. They strive to highlight the concepts of religion and worship from the outside looking in — inspiring us to dissect our minds one layer at a time and give credit to who we believe deserves worthiness — maybe even ourselves.

Last week, MOTHERMARY opened the second night of AFI‘s back-to-back shows in Hollywood, CA. Upon stepping onstage, these women submerge the crowd into their own spiritual experience. Their performance is captivating from the start as they unveil themselves gradually under a single red light. Hearing them sing in perfect harmony sparks something inside — like a mirror had been placed in front of us, allowing us to take a look inside at ourselves to appreciate our own holiness that we don’t always realizes exists. We felt lifted to a transcendent moment in time throughout the set. MOTHERMARY is the perfect balance of intrigue, confidence, exploration and allurement.

Their twelve track debut album, I Am Your God, was released earlier this year via Italians Do It Better. Each tracks flows effortlessly into the next, making the listening experience seamless. The record is a total mood setter from front to back. MOTHERMARY makes us feel confident, sexy, and motivated — and we love it.
