Photos / Review: Kimbra at the Wonder Ballroom in Portland, Oregon

Who: Kimbra, Arc Iris

Where: Wonder Ballroom, Portland, Oregon

When: February 8, 2018

Many will remember Kimbra as the featured voice in Gotye’s hit song, “Somebody That I Used to Know.” It’s hard to forget her powerful voice that couples Gotye and elevates his song, and even harder to forget the uniqueness and art behind the visuals of the music video. The same uniqueness and the same powerful voice has followed her throughout her own career, and she delivers a breathtaking performance in a packed Portland venue.

Kimbra has become known for the continued uniqueness of her music videos, and the projections of her performance also resembled and reflected her artistic vision. Behind her stood two large cubes that were lined with lights and illuminated the stage and audience, and contained the projects throughout her set as well. Alongside her booming voice, Kimbra shows off her multi-instrumental talent. Her rig stood center stage, containing a multitude of synthesizers, MIDI pads, and voice manipulators. For multiple songs, Kimbra took up a guitar as well.

Kimbra’s new album, Primal Heart, was originally slated for a February release but was delayed. This didn’t stop Kimbra from embarking on her dubbed ‘Primal Heart Tour’, and instead fans were treated and exposed to many new and unreleased tracks. To counter a heavy set of new music, Kimbra also included older tracks such as “Settle Down” and “As You Are.” Despite what era or song Kimbra performed, the crowd was captivated by her incredible visual display and unbelievable voice.

Primal Heart, will be released on April 20, 2018 through Warner Bros. Records.
