Album Review: Story Untold – “Waves”

Waves - Story Untold

In February, Story Untold released their debut album, Waves, on Hopeless Records. They had previously put out a self-titled EP in 2016. The five-piece group is from Québec, Canada, but they’ve already toured the US a few times, including two tours with fellow Canadians, Simple Plan.

The album starts with a pretty steady guitar riff, and then the rest of the instruments join in to complete the song. “In Or Out” has a good beat that is heard throughout the whole song, and it definitely makes you want to move along. “The 3ND” is one of my favorite tracks on the record. Something about the sound of the song, especially in the chorus, makes me want to listen to it again and again. “Delete” immediately sounded familiar to me, even after just listening to it a couple of times. It’s reminiscent of a single that you’d hear on the radio. The lyrics do a good job of working in social media references to explain a relationship.

“Dreams That We Don’t Share” starts slow before picking up. The lyrics on this song stand out, like the line “I’m tired of chasing stars for those who just don’t care.” The next track is the one that I relate to the most. “California” is about, well, wanting to move to California, something that I hope to do one day. From the start, “Invisible” does sound like it’s going to be a slow song, but it gets heavier as it goes on. There’s a pretty nice guitar solo during the bridge. “All The Same (Once A Liar, Always A Liar)” draws you in from the first time that you hear it. It’s a very catchy song, with emotional lyrics such as “if it means anything now, you mean nothing to me.” Waves closes with “Chasing Feelings,” which ends the album on a somber note. This is a softer track with a deep meaning. It took me a couple of listens to really absorb the words. After an instrumental part, the album fades to a close with voices whispering in the background.

Throughout the album, nearly every song seemed to be dominated by the guitars of Jessy Bergy and Max Cloutier. Even though the year just started, I can already tell that this is going to be one of my favorite releases of 2018. Waves is very catchy, and you’ll definitely want to keep listening to it.
