Interview: Hollow speaks on debut album, 2017 plans, and more

Concert Crap: Hey, Hollow! How are you guys doing?

John Flynn: Doing well, doing very well.

CC: You guys are a metal band. Was it a conscious decision that you were going to be metal or did it come about naturally?

JF: Being a metal band in general came kind of naturally for us. Everything else was a conscious decision, but we knew we wanted to play something heavy from the start.

CC: There are lots of exciting things coming up for you with the release of your debut album Home Isn’t Where The Heart Is. How did this album come about?

JF: This album was actually a pretty long time in the making. There are riffs in there that were written maybe three years ago. We went through a lot of awful stuff since then, and I think those experiences shaped the record the most. There’s a lot of aggression in there.

CC: Something I found really unique about this album was that it has elements of a lot of different genres in it. Why is that?

JF: We’ve never been able to narrow our sound down to one style. A lot of people would say that’s a problem, but I’d say it’s one of the best things about us. We have so many sounds that we want to explore, I think it gives us the ability to reach a lot of people. It’s a pretty good feeling.

CC: What were some things that you knew absolutely had to be in your album?

JF: We had to have a heavy dose of honesty. In the past we beat around the bush a lot with lyricism, and it never felt right. We knew we had to be honest, and we had to be aggressive.

CC: You guys used to be known as Hollow Heart. What made you change the name to Hollow?

JF: It’s a different band. We’ve changed our lineup since then, and also crafted an entirely different sound. It would have been wrong to release this music under the Hollow Heart name considering the circumstances that album was written and released under.

CC: What can we look forward to seeing from you guys for the rest of 2017?

JF: We’ve got a new single on the way, and the record drops June 9th, so there’s a lot of new content still on the way. We’re looking to be on the road this summer, so keep an eye out for us in your town!

CC: Is there anything else you’d like to add to this interview?
