Concert Crap: You guys have a pretty killer live stage presence. What do you draw your inspiration of being on stage from?
Rix: One thing that all of us have in common is that we were all inspired by a lot great performers and those inspirations definitely translate into our live shows, but our biggest influence is simply the love of playing. We try to make our performances about more than just the music. We want our audience to feel what we are feeling on stage and make sure they understand that our message is real and from the heart. We really love what we do so when we hit the stage the passion and energy just explodes.
Kurly: I used to have stage fright growing up, it scared me going in front of people to do something. But when I look at the bands from Black Sabbath, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Guns N Roses and all sorts of other bands, it’s like their music and look encourages them to show people who they are and what they do. Like bringing the old look and modernizing it.
Cam: I draw my inspiration from my lifetime hero Travis Barker and bands such as August Burns Red and A Day to Remember.
Benji: Being in the moment and showing that I enjoy playing so much that I cannot stand still. The music is loud and so should our body language.
CC: Has their been something you tried on stage that failed miserably that you’ll never do again? Whether it be a new move, trying to incorporate the crowd on something new, etc?
Rix: Well Kurly did break hit leg on the trampoline during our first music video shoot but the fans loved it so i wouldn’t really consider that a fail. lol
Kurly: Oh yes. We had a stage where the trampoline is in the middle and the guitar and bass player jump from one side to another. We did that for our music video and we thought we should do it for shows. However, during the first take on filming, I jumped and rolled my ankle and popped it out of place. And when I landed it popped back in, causing a bad sprain that hurt tremendously. But I did finish the video in a wheelchair. Will never do that again.
Cam: The only thing I’ve tried to do and failed on stage was doing a stick flip during a breakdown and not catching the stick. Thank god for back ups.
Benji: I once tried to lift up a heavy Explorer shaped guitar by the whammy bar mid-solo and broke the strings.
CC: Who are some of your musical inspirations?
Rix: We all have influences that come from everywhere which helped us develop our sound. My personal influences though are Motley Crue, Marilyn Manson, Rob Zombie, Black Sabbath, Megadeth, Metallica, Rammstein, Smashing Pumpkins, Korn, Avenged Sevenfold, just to name a few.
Kurly: The list goes on. But the main ones are Toni Iommi, Stevie Ray Vaughan. Black Sabbath got me to pick up the guitar and Stevie Ray Vaughan helped me find my technique.
Benji: In Flames, Motley Crue, Dokken, Silverstein, Megadeth, As I Lay Dying…Let’s just say I have well over 100GB of music I’ve collected over the years and I am no where near satisfied.
CC: Do you find it easier or more difficult to expand your music being from Southern California because there are so many bands and artists you have to compete with?
Rix: None of us look at music as a competition. it’s not football. If you develop a loyal fan base, we feel you have nothing to worry about.
Kurly: Compete? Music should not be a competition. I’m not in it to be big and famous, I’m in this band to play music, meet new people and travel. Cali can be a tough place to get noticed because there’s so many bands that want to be heard but we feel it only makes us stronger.
Cam: I dont look at them as competition, I look at them as fellow musicians.
Benji: Definitely, there are a lot more people running the race in Southern California. Certain areas have a fixed genre, certain areas vary by the day of the week, and some places have no idea what they are doing.
CC: What are you hoping to accomplish in the rest of 2017?
Rix: We are looking to reach out more. have a few successful tours. We’ve got some good stuff under wraps in the works.
Cam: Accomplish in 2017: tour outside of California!
Kurly: We hope to have a very successful tour. We are also in the process of our second album which will be release sometime this year. There’s a lot in store for us this year.
CC: Why should people care about Firing All Cylinders?
Rix: We like to look at our fans more as family than fans. We love, respect, and care deeply about our followers because they inspire us to keep going.
Kurly: We’re fans of music ourselves and like to meet new bands and people as we do shows or go to shows. We show support and encourage them to keep on going. And after shows, we all hang out and have a good time.
Cam: We want to be the band that fans know they can hang out with and party with and to always have a good time with at our shows. We take the time for every interview, every autograph, every signing and every hug and high five from each of you.
Benji: We are making music that sounds just as dangerous as it is fun.
CC: Is there anything else you would like to say to your fans or anyone else reading this interview at all?
Rix: Just want to give a should out to everyone that has supported up to this point. We are truly thankful for all your support because we are nothing without you guys. THANK YOU!!!
