Interpol played one of their biggest headlining shows of the year on Thursday at the Shrine Auditorium & Expo Hall in Los Angeles.
The venue sold out in less than a week after going on sale and was also held the day before the band’s second Coachella performance.
The band played songs spanning 13 years worth of history from all of their albums, minus their self-titled release.
The Shrine stage was an exuberant setting for the band from New York. Numerous background screens lit up the general admission room that held more than 6,000 attendees. The images on the screens behind them were of their latest album cover, “El Pintor,” slow-flowing ocean waves, and various colorful shapes that illuminated the eyes of those watching.
Of course, the band played classic hit songs such as “Evil” and “Slow Hands,” which had the crowd more than normal. But cheers and encouragement from the crowd came from the band playing their catchy hooks and guitar solos in songs such as “My Desire.”
Daniel Kessler was animated more than usual, as he was very fluid and mobile, while highlighting his instrument and being the center of attention while on stage.
Lead singer Paul Banks also moved around a little more than he normally does as well. This was very new to see, but added to the band’s positive on stage presence.
Following 14 songs, the band exited the stage and then, of course, the inevitable encore came soon after with: “PDA,” “Untitled,” and “All the Rage Back Home,” respectively. Drummer Sam Forgarino came up following the final song and waved to the audience, as he does not always do this.
Show is over right? Not on this special night. From what seemed like their final exit was anything but. The loudest roar of the evening from the crowd was when the band returned for a second encore and closed out the evening with “NYC.”
The band played not one, but two encores, exciting fans all over the venue. The band always seems to enjoy their time in Southern California, playing larger venues every time they come back.
Fans waited for more than seven hours in line in anticipation of getting near the front. As soon as doors opened, the crowd sprinted to the barricade, quickly filling up any empty spots they could see closer to the stage.
Coachella band Perfume Genius served as the openers for the evening.
