Interview: Getting to know Audio Impulse

Concert Crap: Can you talk about a brief history of the band?

Barry Phillips: We started Audio Impulse roughly four years ago. We made our first official CD release for Plug In & Tune Out about six months out of the gate. We mostly stayed local to our home city of Philadelphia while gigging in support of that release. As we were pushing that record we began work on our second release a four track EP Straight Shot. With the lead up to that release we started gaining a little more traction out of our home market, branching out to New York, Delaware, and the dirty Jerz, and much more within Philly playing bigger shows and festivals like Philly’s Liberty Musicfest and Dewey Beach Music Conference, we opened for Alien Ant Farm and Hed PE when they were in town in 2015. We just got back from a stint with The Extreme Music Tour in 2016 on the Southeastern US leg and we’re currently about to head to the studio to write and record our next release.

CC: What does your band name mean?

BP: Audio Impulse means whatever you’d like it to mean. For us it was originally going to be ‘Arc Impulse’, a nod to Squaresoft’s Chrono Trigger, because we’re nerds and were going to make the name a video game reference. Unfortunately ‘Arc Impulse’ is another band, and we had been playing with the words sound, sonic, audio, etc., in the name and Audio Impulse happened to stick. No deep or inspirstional meaning there for us, but it could be worse one of us could’ve beat Frogger thrice and thought ‘Thrice’ was great name for a band.

CC: Who are some of your musical inspirations?

Thrice, I fanboy for Thrice, as evident in the fact that I even know where their name came from, but more to the point we’re kind of all over the place when it comes to influences. The most apparent when listening to the sound on both “Plug in & Tune Out” and “Straight Shot” is 90’s era punk, pop punk, and alt rock. We have intentions on drawing from a much deeper well of influences with our next record looking towards some bands like Apex Theory and Muse, things like Smashing Pumpkins and At the Drive-in which I don’t even know how to place into a genre, so that should get very interesting.

CC: Who would you like to tour with realistically and unrealistically?

BP: Have I mentioned I love Thrice? I think that falls under a realistic aspiration of who we’d like to tour with. Any of the bands mentioned above would be amazing. Touring would the Foo Fighters would be a dream come true for all of us. Maybe some bands that came from our area would be cool like The Gaslight Anthem and The Wonder Years would be pretty dope. There really isn’t many bands/artists I think we’d shy away from.

CC: What does the rest of 2016 have in store for you guys?

BP: The rest of the year is going to be mostly writing new material and getting the process started on the next record. We have three more gigs this month, a cancer benefit in Delaware, a roller derby game in NJ (Which should be really cool), and then one last show back home in Philly before we break to just write a boat load of songs for the next record.

CC: Is there anything else you’d like to say to your fans or anyone that may be reading this interview at all?

BP: Thanks for all the love and support you’ve given us up until this point! It’s truly the fan interactions that make writing and performing music worth all the time and energy we put into it. Without the fans we’re just four guys in a basement making more noise than the neighbors could care for, so that being said, thank you again and we hope to see you all in 2017!
