Everything in Slow Motion, through Facedown Records, is the project of Shane Ochsner. If you recognize the name, Ochsner used to be in the metal band Hands.
The band’s newest EP Laid Low is the follow up from their LP Phoenix, released in 2013. But expect to hear a departure from Ochsner’s band Hands. It is not a change for the good, but for the great.
“Coma” sets the stage for what is to come, and it sets it off right. A line on the track states, “I hope you find what you’re looking for.” and is the perfect setting for the EP because I feel like this is the music that I was looking for.
“I am Laid Low” goes from soft to hard in an instant and never compromises the style of the EP. “Capella” is the softer side of the project, calming down your soul after a powerful previous four tracks.
“Runaway” is my favorite track off of the release because it starts off soothing and calm, but slowly and smoothly hooks you in deeper and deeper with Ochsner’s amazing vocals. There is even an amazing breakdown that builds with anticipation, giving those hardcore music fans something to go crazy about live in concert.
Everything in Slow Motion stylistically blends together hard rock and post-hardcore elements, bringing out the best things that come out of the genres. The band sounds similar to that of Thrice, Taking Back Sunday, Saosin, and more bands of those post-hardcore and experimental style genres.
Each track off Laid Low is perfect. The only thing I hated about this release is that it wasn’t a full-length album because I cannot get enough of it. Pick up Laid Low, it is already one of my top picks of 2016 and hopefully it will be for you as well.
