Dustin Kensrue headlined the Constellation Room at the Observatory OC on June 7. The lead singer of Thrice was in well-known territory in Orange County, supporting his latest album, “Carry The Fire,” released in April.
Kensrue streamlined through songs off his first album to his latest, and everything in between.
He led off with “Ruby,” followed by “Back to Back.” He played nearly all of his entire latest album, and had many in the small venue room singing along with him.
Fans voices grew even louder when he played songs off his first solo album, “Please Come Home.” He played songs, “I Knew Your Before,” “Consider the Ravens,” and “Pistol.”
Backup band for Kensrue was the second band that played the evening, The Rocketboys. They left Kensrue after a short first set so he could play acoustically, only to return after that to finalize the evening.
Kensrue played songs acoustically, alone on stage, and some with his harmonica. Acoustically, he played songs such as: “There’s Something Dark,” It’s Not Enough,” and a cover of Bruce Springsteen’s song “Atlantic City.”
Fans become even more excited when Kensrue played Thrice song “A Song for Milly Michaelson” acoustically.
The singer and audience had constant banter throughout the evening, but it was all mutually respectful, with no one getting too crazy, and giving the singer his spotlight when he did sing.
Finalizing the set was the title track and finale off his latest album, “Carry the Fire.” The build up of the song was a tremendous way to end the set, gaining momentum, shining throughout and ending with Kensrue’s lone voice speaking the last words.
Local band Olin and the Moon opened for the evening.
Kensrue did play in the OC a few weeks prior when Thrice officially played their comeback show at the House of Blues in Anaheim in May. The review for that show is here.
