D.U.M.B. Luck released their latest single “Joyful” on November 23rd. The Philly Duo is comprised of Jack Correll and Luke Volkert. Soon after meeting in a high school drawing class soon, the duo teamed up to start creating their own music. Both were members of the indie rock band Bluebird whose song “Mischief” racked up over 1.3 million streams. Bluebird headlined their own East Coast tour and shared the stage with Lunar Vacation and Friday Pilots Club.
The duo’s first project was released on Bandcamp at the end of their senior year of high school. It was comprised of multiple musical styles that were influential on the band. After graduation Correll and Volkert were apart for 4 years while they attended college at Tufts University in Massachusetts and Oberlin College in Ohio. The two focused on improving their musical skills, relegated to collaborative music-making from afar. They reunited at the Jersey Shore in the middle of winter to finish recording and arranging songs they had begun in the Spring of 2020.
Speaking about the new song, D.U.M.B. Luck says “Joyful means that you’re so full of happiness that you forget all of your troubles.” It is the perfect mix of JAWNY style Philly DIY and Electric Guest’s infectious electro pop. As a rubbery bass groove weaves between breakbeat drum samples, the duo laments unrequited love: overly animated vocals cover the cries of distorted electric guitar and buzzing synths, telling a trivial teenage sob story through self-aware wit.
“Joyful” is out everywhere now, listen here.
