Countdown to Kraken Fest 2022

Kraken Music Fest coming to Orlando

It’s less than a week away until Kraken Fest 2022 hits the stage at the Orlando Ampitheater on Saturday February 19th.  There have been a few changes to the lineup since the festival was originally announced. The Used is still headlining however Anberlin has replaced Less Than Jake while Felicity has been added as an additional act.

The latest forecast from Zeus, God of the Sky, is highs in the mid-70s with no rain in the outlook.  How often does one get to attend a music festival without either blistering heat or monsoon showers? Well, this weekend is your chance unless someone mistakenly insults the gods.

This will be the third occurrence of the annual festival. “We are insanely excited for Kraken Fest 2022,” says festival founders Freddy Escobar and Marcelo Ferreira. “Orlando has welcomed us with open arms since our first show there, so we are thrilled to be back and continue to grow. We are pumped to have the opportunity to bring The Used back to Florida after the unforeseen cancellation of their Orlando show earlier this year. And of course, we always look for ways to stay true to our roots and ensure Florida bands are well represented.” The list of Florida bands for this year’s show includes The Dev, We’re Wolves, Evergreen Terrace, and The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus.

I’m sure all the bands performing on Saturday will put on a great show. However, there are two bands that will make my grueling 450-mile odyssey to Orlando worthwhile. The first band is The Used. I was in musical hibernation throughout the 2000’s and somehow managed to miss the entire Emo / Post-hardcore era including bands like My Chemical Romance, Panic At the Disco!, Jimmy Eat World, and the aforementioned The Used. It was only in the last year that I discovered the band when I reviewed their latest album, Heartwork (read here). Since then, I have been hooked with songs like “The Taste of Ink”, “Buried Myself Alive”, “The Bird and the Worm”, and “Paradise Lost, A Poem by John Milton” making their way to my playlist. The later has keep me up late many a night with the chorus repeating over and over in my head.

The second band I’m excited to see is horror rock band We’re Wolves. Besides having a killer name, they also recently released their kick-ass debut album, Evil Things featuring powerful vocals by front man AJ Diaferio. This happens to be another album I reviewed last year (read here). It takes the listener on a journey through the nine levels of hell in Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy. The album was worthwhile enough to enlist guest appearances by Bryan Kuznitz from the Florida rock band Fame on FireIce Nine Kills front man Spencer Charnas, and pop singer Rain Paris.
