Concert Crap: Who is Comrades? Can you give us a brief band history?
Comrades evolved out of another project about seven years ago, and had quite a few starts and stops early on. We originally were a post-hardcore/screamo band, then spent a few years doing fully instrumental, post-rock music, before slowly adding vocals back in over our last album. We always tried to tour as hard as we could, and the DIY touring community has been our home away from home. Because we’ve played off and on through so many different chapters of our life, our influences have widened from our roots in hardcore and screamo music, to math-rock, emo and folk, among other things. We just try to play the music we want to play and want to hear, and hope people are into that!
CC: Lone / Grey is out 10/7, how proud are you of this record?
Not to down on anything we have done in the past, but Lone / Grey is by far the album we are most proud of. We all were able to put things we have been holding on to for years into this album, and make something that incorporates both where we are now and elements of our past. Somehow, we were able to make something that is current and relevant to our lives now, but also something that we would have been stoked on 10 years ago.
CC: What are some of your best moments when creating it?
Since we were mostly an instrumental band for years, hearing the vocals come together in the studio the way we hoped they would was just was an incredible feeling.
CC: When will you tour for this record?
We have two “release tours”, the west coast in October, and east coast in November. We will also be touring full time next year!
CC: Anything you can tease for the fans who are hoping to see you live?
Well, we have been playing many of the same songs for years, so on these album release tours we are just playing most of the new album straight through, which is definitely a new and different live experience for us!
CC: Being such a young and up and coming band, do you feel as though you’ve made all the right decisions to get to where you are now?
We’ve actually been a band for quite a few years, and have had lots of ups and downs on our journey, including mistakes. But for the first time ever, we all live in the same city, and we finally have the momentum and support we’ve always wanted. We were a long distance band for most of our existence, and it feels so good to all be on the same page and in the same place.
CC: What advice would you give to a band just starting out?
Hard work does pay off. Few bands “get a break” these days, and having a work ethic and determination is the most important part of our story. All the cool connections and opportunities we’ve had as a band came through touring hard and working to better ourselves.
CC: What does the rest of 2016 have in store for you guys?
We’re mainly just touring to support the new album, and starting to work on writing our next. We will all go home to see our families for the holidays, which will be a nice break before we hit it hard in 2017.
CC: Are there any final thoughts you’d like to express or anything you’d like to say to your fans?
We’ve been so incredibly blessed to have so many people support us over this journey, and the friendships we have all over the country due to music are so important and meaningful! Thank you all so much!
