Electronica synth-pop duo Blaqk Audio released their newest album, Trop d’amour, on September 16th. The record marks the sixth studio release since their 2007 debut with CexCells. Blaqk Audio is a side project created by Davey Havok and Jade Puget of AFI. Though different from the evolutionary hardcore sounds of AFI, Blaqk Audio is a symphony of darkwave dance and synth-pop goodness. The pair celebrated the launch with hundreds of their biggest supporters and friends by playing an album release show on September 24th at The Fonda Theatre in Hollywood.
Opening the show was alt-electro-ethereal artist Dove Armitage. With a stunning performance and genre-blurring sound, we felt drawn into her dark and intriguing spirit. A deep, emotional undertone laced into a wavy, bold sound had us drawn into every moment. (Stay tuned for a future showcase featuring Dove Armitage — yes, we loved her that much and know you will, too.)
With high anticipation, the crowd warmly welcomed Blaqk Audio as they emerged in their usual, effortlessly cool mien. They launched into the show with “First Love” followed by an impressive seventeen song set. The setlist consisted of a variety of tracks from CexCells, Material, Only Things We Love, Beneath the Black Palms and of course, Trop d’amour. The audience was fortunate enough to hear “Blue Cherry” as well as the live debut of “Absolute Scenes” and “Cowboy Nights” — all songs from Trop d’amour.
There is a captivating, ethereal aura paired with a dreamy electronica sound that surrounds Blaqk Audio. It can be easily detected in both studio recordings as well their live performances. The energy released and received is both powerful and grounding, yet makes us want to dance the night away and forget about reality. It is truly exceptional when artists craft the ability to temporarily transport your headspace to a place that you cannot always get to on your own. The entire venue seemed to be blissfully absent from the real world that night — something we all can appreciate from time to time.
Trop d’amour boasts that same ability to open a mental portal and deliver your mind to an alternate world. There is a flowing euphoria backed by transformative instrumentals and moods that carry you on getaway through each track. We love the darkwave, punchy percussion and 80’s derived sounds mixed with gleaming synth. “Sharp Teeth” is a personal favorite which tucks perfectly into my industrial synth-goth inspired playlist. Since its release, this album has served as a beautiful, cinematic soundtrack to my night drives around Los Angeles. For anyone who adores any of the subgenres and instrumental characteristics previously mentioned, we assure you will fall in love with Trop d’amour. We encourage you to take a listen — now available to stream on all platforms. If you’re really feeling the love, check out the vinyl bundles offered by Blaqk Audio.
