On August 11th, hard rock band Hinder released their sixth studio album, The Reign. This is their second album with their new lead singer, Marshal Dutton. While many longtime fans may be hesitant to listen to their new music at first, they should definitely give it a chance, as they may find a renewed love for this band.
The album opens with the title track, “The Reign.” The song fades in before going into a nice guitar riff. The fast beat is maintained throughout the song, but slows down a bit for the bridge. Hinder played “King of the Letdown” on their last tour, and it definitely caught on with their fans. It’s a song that is sure to get stuck in your head the first time you hear it. “Too Late” opens with a bit of a country sound, but the rest of it is pure rock. “Another Way Out” has a very catchy rhythm that flows really well in the verses, and it contains a great guitar solo.
“Making It Hard” has a very typical “Hinder” sound. Dutton’s impressive vocals are showcased well on this song. This is one of my favorite tracks on the record. “Long Gone,” is a very emotional song that grows on you as you listen to it. Lines like “we tore down our paradise, we swore it’d be there for life,” really stick out to me. The chorus of the song sounds a bit familiar. The last song on the album, “Loser’s Salute,” starts with whistling and a slow verse, before picking up in the first chorus.
Even though The Reign and Hinder’s previous album, When The Smoke Clears, sound different with Dutton on vocals, I do really like the direction that the band is heading in. Just like how people mature over the years, bands change as time goes on, and The Reign is a perfect example of Hinder doing just that.
