Album Review: Cub Sport – “BATS”

BATS is an album by Australian indie band Cub Sport. I was very eager to listen to it, as I’m an avid indie fan. I heard of Cub Sport through some mutual friends, who are in the LGBTQ+ community, that recommended me some cool music. Of course, I fell in love with the smooth voice of Tim Nelson. Their sophomore album completely blew me away. This was so up my alley.

The album contains 13 songs on the standard album, and three bonus tracks on the deluxe edition. The first song “Chasin” sounds very influenced by The Griswolds to me. And I love The Griswolds.

My favorite track on the album is the third track, called “O Lord” which is very gospel-led and very raw starting with the intro of the song. It begins with just Tim, and some harmonies, which made me melt to my feet. The track just felt very open and airy, and it just shows all the talent he has. This also goes perfectly with my next favorite song. The seventh on the album, “Give It To Me (Like You Mean It)” a ukulele-led song. I don’t know if I can express how much I love Tim’s voice, his range in “Give It To Me” is incredible.

Every song on this album is authentic, and catchy. Genuinely gritty, very well written. Zoe’s guitar tones, Bolan’s synths, and Dan’s every rhythm is exactly what BATS needed, and they fit perfectly. There is no doubt in my mind there will be the same emotions and energy on stage as there are on the recording. So whatever Cub Sport releases next, I will jump right on. Catch them on their 2017 Australian tour, and soon their 2018 US tour, which you’ll find me at.
