Album Review: As It Is – ‘The Great Depression’

On August 10, As It Is released their third full-length album The Great Depression. This album is split up evenly into four parts: Denial, Anger, Bargaining, and Acceptance.

The album opens with the title track, which has really compelling lyrics that seem to be talking to you. It sets the tone and introduces the story for the rest of the record. “The Wounded World” was the first song released off The Great Depression. It’s super catchy and will get stuck in your head the first time that you hear it. Like other tracks of the album, it’s packed with depth and lyrics that will stay with you for a while. Another song that was released a couple of months before the rest of the album was “The Stigma (Boys Don’t Cry).” This is one of those meaningful songs, with a message that’s truly needed right now. “The Handwritten Letter” features audio clips from fans talking about what music means to them. The second section of the album is wrapped up with “The Question, The Answer.” It’s a slower song infused with different electronic elements.

“The Reaper” is a guitar-heavy song, featuring Aaron Gillespie from Underoath. The next song, “The Two Tongues (Screaming Salvation)” starts with clips from what sounds like an old song. This is another sound that tells a story within it. The Great Depression ends with “The End.” It wraps up the album, concluding the story that was told within these twelve tracks.

The Great Depression is an album that you have to sit down to listen to all at once to really absorb the full story that is being told. The songs all flow together perfectly. This is definitely going to be one of the best albums of 2018 for me.
