Who is Heart of Oak?

Heart of Oak - Promo

Concert Crap: Who is Heart of Oak? What does your band name mean?

Jimmy Broomfield: To cut it short, the “Heart of Oak” is the main, long piece of wood put down in an old wooden ship. I’m from the New Forest and one half of my family have been sailors for hundreds of years and the other half have been foresters (we’re talking four or five hundred years here). The foresters would cultivate and then cut the trees to be turned into ships for the other half to sail on! Heart of Oak seemed pretty appropriate.

CC: What is your folk, soul and alt-country sound inspired by?

JB: Lots and lots of people, John K Samson/The Weakerthans, Otis Redding, Rocky Votolato, Iron and Wine, John Martyn, Joe Pug. LOADS of bands and solo artists, plus a lot of writers, both of books, movies and comic books. I really believe that all gets soaked in and becomes food for songs, it’s all ideas and questions at the end of the day.

CC: What are you hoping to accomplish by this time next year?

JB: I want to have a second record out, or at least on the way, to have toured a whole bunch and to feel a little more secure in what I’m doing. I want to have some help from a label or booking or whatever else, and most importantly, to go a whole year with feeling pumped and confident. I have this “lizard brain” thing that makes me keep stopping and thinking I’m not good enough at what I’m doing and every inch I’m moving forward is kicking its butt a little bit.

CC: What does the rest of 2016 have in store for you?

JB: I’m hoping to set all the pieces up for E.P|TWO and to book in for a really, really busy 2017 with lots of touring and a whole bunch of new friends and cool adventures.

CC: Is there anything else you’d like to say to your fans or anyone that may be reading this interview?

JB: Which is better, a blog or a newsletter? I’m wondering which one to really start doing on the regular.

Any tips for kicking the Lizard brain’s butt?

Is Adventure Time the best animated tv show of the last decade? Because I was mega into Avatar/Korra, but I’m so so so in love with Adventure Time it’s unreal.

Also, if you don’t know me, thanks for reading this and can we be friends? and if you do know me, thanks for reading this and ‘Hi’, let’s keep being friends because that’s really great and stuff.
