Track-by-Track with Shallow Side and their EP “One”

“WE ROLL”

We wanted to write a song for the team we love most.  The Crimson Tide is a very familiar word around each of our households and we wanted to tip our hats to them.  Diving a bit further into the song we relate much more to the word Tide.  A rolling body of water relentless in its effort to be slowed or stopped.  “Living our lives underneath these lights”.  It’s not just music for us.  It’s a lifestyle here in Shallow Side and we love it.

“REBEL” (Eric)

Growing up I never really fit in.  It’s easy to see that if you take my personality and shove it into a small town in north Alabama.  Have you seen Footloose?  I’m Kevin Bacon and by God my small town wasn’t ready to dance when I showed up!  Where I’m from you get two choices:  You finish high school and go to work at the local factory, or you go to the community college where you learn your trade for that same factory.  Either way you’re having children at a young age and repeating the small town spiral.

This didn’t settle well with me.  In fact it terrifies me to this date.  No dreams?  No goals?  No ambitions?  You don’t want more than this?  These questions made me an outcast, and finding answers only solidified resentment from the same people telling me how to live.

Ask me then what I wanted and I honestly couldn’t tell you, but I knew I had dreams.  I knew there was a goal I haven’t seen yet. I oozed ambition and more was all I ever wanted.  After pushing harder and playing the lone wolf I discovered music and the people in it.  They too shared the same visions as I did.  This ultimately was the backbone of the song “Rebel”.   I never wanted to be regular, it didn’t feel right.  I never shot for mediocre, I always fought for more.  After finding rock ‘n’ roll I learned there were a lot more of my type of people. I guess you could say…”We’re all rebels.”   Question everything was my motto. Do as you please was my creed.

“RENEGADE”

“Renegade” was a no brainer for us after the song was initially thought of.

Everyone always wants to do the “pop cover” change it into a heavy version so people can enjoy their particular taste of pop music and not feel judged for liking “pop” music.  For us, when thinking of a cover we wanted to grab a real ROCK ‘N’ ROLL song and bring it into the new world of rock music. “Renegade” kinda found us as we were searching and discussing it was playing faintly in the background. The harmonies and guitar riffs hypnotized us and before we knew it we were tracking.

“FIGHT OF FLIGHT”

Persistence and perseverance.  The song starts with a yell proclaiming what “you’d” have us to if we didn’t think or want for ourselves.  The band has underwent several mountains of hardships and have fought through brilliantly.  We are all given two choices every day we are granted to exist. Fight?, OR Flight?

“CAN YOU HEAR ME”

I’ve been gifted a trade.  A trade to entertain and enlighten.  A voice that persuades and moves. Through our travels I’ve learned people are searching for something or someone to hold on to.  This song is my acceptance to that.  With a nod to mythology in the first verse to rallying the troops throughout the song.  We are here, we are now, and we will continue.

“START A FIRE”

The art of promiscuity. Who doesn’t like a little taste of the forbidden fruit? Start a Fire word for word captures the essence of debauchery.  A look into the light of what we see and know very well.  Keep in mind that because we write and sing about it doesn’t mean it has to be about us. HAHA. But what fun would it be if we lied all the time?
