The Birthday Massacre brought their North American tour to the Vinyl Music Hall in Pensacola, Florida on Sep 29th. The 18-city tour started on Sep 15th in Philadelphia, PA and concluded in Toronto, ON on Oct 9th. For the Pensacola date, the Toronto-based goth rock band was joined by L.A. rockers Dead Posey and Philadelphia, PA electronic pop duo Korine.
Unfortunately, the attendance for the show was disappointingly low. There was a goth ambience in the music hall with fans dressed in dark attire. Dark purple and blue lighting added to this atmosphere. The Birthday Massacre opened with a haunting rendition of “Stars and Satellites” from the band’s recently released album, Fascination. They played songs that spanned their 20-year career. Even though the crowd was small, those in attendance were into the show. Every time lead singer Chibi spoke to the crowd there were yells of “heck yeah”.
During “Goodnight” a young girl from the crowd came up on stage to join Chibi as she sang. She was a little timid at first but after a few moments a smile broke through on her face. The band played a long 17-song set before coming back on stage for another three songs. As Chibi was thanking the crowd for coming, a fan shouted for her to sing “Happy Birthday” which see obliged. This was the fan favorite for the night. The band closed with “In The Dark” from their Pins and Needles album.
The band was generous enough to provide me with a plus one ticket for the show, so I forced my college son to come along since he was home for the week due to Hurricane Ian. He is not someone that is really into music or going to concerts. However, he really enjoyed the show. It’s easy for a band to excite diehard fans, but when they manage to impress a non-musical youth then you know they did something right.
The Birthday Massacres North American tour is now over. However, those in the UK will have a chance to see the band starting on Oct 31st in London. Tour dates are shown below. Tickets can be purchased here.
