Song Review: Small Town Titans – “You’re A Mean One, Mr. Grinch”

“You’re A Mean One, Mr. Grinch” is one of my favorite Christmas carols ever. It’s fun, it’s soulful, and it’s different from the rest of the songs you hear on the radio this time of year. I’ve looked for years for a cover of this song that I like, but could not find one until Small Town Titans completely changed that.

The original version of the song reaches low notes that most singers can hardly dream of, so when I listened to their cover for the first time, I was shocked to hear vocalist Phil Freeman sing those low low notes. I’m even more impressed with the Freddie Mercury-like range of notes in this song and can’t believe that each one, no matter how high or low, is struck effortlessly. The soul of the original song is kept, but the twist that Small Town Titans puts on this classic makes it seem like their version is the original and anything else is actually a cover. I appreciate that they kept the instrumentals fairly simple, with the focus on the vocals. It’s a top notch cover of a very difficult song and I’m really excited to see what they’ll put out next.
