Smashing Pumpkins and Marilyn Manson bring 90’s nostalgia back

Nineties nostalgia was in full swing in Irvine Thursday evening when “The End Times Tour” stopped by Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre and had co-headliners Smashing Pumpkins and Marilyn Manson playing.

When Manson took the stage at 8 p.m. sharp, the sun was still out, and not even half of the seats were filled, but by the end, dusk had settled in and everyone found their seat.

Manson started off the evening with a song off his new album, The Pale Emperor, singing “Deep Six.”  EVen though most of the older fans didn’t know the new song, it was still easy to rock out to for them all.

Next was the more recognizable “Disposable Teens,” which many sang along to.  The night seemed to be a blast from the past, with Manson singing many of his more recognizable hits, including his rendition of covers with “Sweet Dreams” and “Personal Jesus.”

Manson’s 65-minute set included plenty of showmanship including: costume changing, dancers, playing on stilts, glitter cannons with cross-shaped confetti, and a burning Bible.

Manson continues to rock just as hard as he did when he first started, and fans continue to enjoy him today.  He had everyone in attendance standing throughout his performance.

He capped off his performance with “The Beautiful People” and helped pave the way for hit predecessors.

Exit Manson, enter Smashing Pumpkins.  The band opened with “Cherub Rock” and never slowed down, keeping their talking to a minimum and their performance at a maximun.  They play nearly all of their 90’s hits including “Tonight, Tonight” and “1979” and many of their lesser hits.

Many fans were standing throughout their performance, but only for most of their hits.  They didn’t quite put on a glitzy show like Manson, but that isn’t really their style and didn’t take away from their set.

The band steam-rolled through 18 songs and a 90-minute performance, basking in the sold-out cheers of the Irvine audience.  Led by Billy Corgan, Smashing Pumpkins played phenomenally and are back with praise and excitement all around.

During the band’s encore, “Greek U.S.A.,” Manson helped the band close out the evening to the fans that stayed for the entire set, sending everyone home to bask in the glow of 90’s night at Irvine Meadows Ampitheatre.

Rapper Cage opened up for the two artists.
