Photos | Review: Jai Wolf takes everyone to another world in Detroit, Michigan

Do you remember that line from The Matrix where Neo asks, “You ever have that feeling where you’re not sure if you’re awake or still dreaming?” That pretty well sums up the experience of watching Sajeeb Saha take the stage as Jai Wolf during The Cure to Loneliness Tour performing in front of a SOLD OUT crowd at The Majestic Theatre.

The Matrix isn’t the only place where movies come to mind though. When the low rumbles being to leak from the speakers and the lights start to fade, only then do you see the stage setup is more reminiscent of a Stargate from the movie of the same name. And that makes sense, because you are about to take a portal to another world. Just as the ‘gate comes to life you see a lone astronaut appear, a bit of a metaphor for the audience about to embark on a journey, and walk through. From that moment on the next few hours are a trip through the cosmos.

The sound starts to get stronger. Louder. Bass-ier. Jai Wolf will take you all over the spectrum from chill to experimental to dance to otherworldly with countless seamless transitions along the way. The set this night being absolutely no exception. Some songs make you feel like you are wandering infinite space while others you would have thought you were floating on the edge of the atmosphere. Sounds that would make you wonder, “Am I awake or am I still dreaming?”

Being that we are in Detroit tonight, some tracks might remind you a bit more of an old-school rave, something that Detroit’s electronic roots helped to pioneer, but there’s plenty of the trippy psychedelic rhythmic sounds too. Hypnotic lights accompanying Jai Wolf on stage only adds to the feel of traveling the galaxy. Still not sure if you’re awake or still dreaming? That’s a good thing because it’s exactly where Jai Wolf wants you to be. The images on stage shapeshifting, lights bending from one color of the rainbow to the other. The entire show is a sensory explosion that you will stick with you for days afterward. So now that you know, do you take the red pill or the blue one?

Jai Wolf’s debut album, The Cure to Loneliness, is out now with additional tour dates through the end of May. If you have the means to make it to a show don’t sleep on it, but if you can’t get to one, make sure to do yourself a favor and check out the whole album!
