Who: Bring Your Army Tour: Orgy, Motograter, Brand of Julez, The Crowned

I have never seen Orgy live before but had heard so many good things that I was really looking forward to their headlining show at Fete Music Hall.
Texas-based metal band The Crowned were first on stage. Right off the bat, the first thing that was unique about the band was that drummer Marc Coronado was also the vocalist; quite a few of my favorite vocalists are drummers, so I was intrigued before they even started their set. The Crowned had an excellent set. Their music was good, the vocals were excellent, and they were really engaging. Coronado – the only one with a mic on stage – demanded the audience’s attention without being overbearing. You also knew he was actually paying attention to everyone in the audience because before they started one of their songs, he got audience participation going by having everyone yell “Nobody fucks you like I fuck you” and called out a couple of people who were not yelling it enthusiastically enough; those who were called out actually looked like they really enjoyed the attention from the stage and were enthusiastic fans after. The band also threw out inflated condoms into the audience after, which were being thrown around like balloons. It was a fun and energetic set. The Crowned was unforgettable for all the right reasons.
New Yorkers Brand Of Julez took to the stage next. This band’s sound was hard to classify; they blur that thin line between hard rock and metal, while also incorporating classical elements into their music. It was a sophisticated sound that I was not expecting to hear from such a young band. They were just as energetic and captivating as the previous band, but in a different way. Vocalist Julez Zamora has an excellent voice, guitarist Nick Kashmanian killed every solo, bassist Brandon Zamora was insane while also providing top-notch backing vocals, and drummer Frankie D’Esposito was magic. Brand of Julez is a great up and coming band that you should be keeping an eye on.
Motograter was up next and they were mesmerizing. Pure heavy metal, they were energetic; the audience was really into their set. The first thing that strikes you about the band is the body paint, but they do not hide behind the makeup at all. Motograter had a very big sound, which was helped by two guitarists, two vocalists, and two drummers. The two vocalists worked well off each other, as did the two guitarists. The second drum set added a cool element that really filled up the room. Every member of Motograter was great at interacting with everyone in the audience. Motograter was my favorite band of the night and is an act not to be missed.
The best part of club shows is how intimate the shows are, but the downside to them is that they tend to go late; by the time Orgy hit the stage, most of the audience had given up and gone home, so they performed to a much smaller audience than the bands before them had. Orgy’s brand of industrial metal is one that is instantly recognizable, and it was a shame that there was not a larger audience there to see them perform. Vocalist Jay Gordon put effort into making sure he sang to everyone in the room and their set was fun.
Every band on the Bring Your Army tour had a different flavor, which made it a great night of music.
