CC: How did you all come to form a band and how long have you been playing together?
We’ve all known each other for years, so this band is the culmination of life-long friendships. We’ve all played together off and on in other projects, so the chemistry of DAWNS is definitely tried and true.
CC: What artists inspire your sound?
What inspires us changes pretty regularly; even though we’re a rock band, at the moment we’re very inspired by a lot of what’s going on in the alternative, R&B scene. Artists like Frank Ocean, FKA Twigs, Lapsley, and Gallant have been influencing our production styles.
CC: What kind of sound can we expect from the EP?
Our debut EP is eclectic. Each song fills a different sonic space, so we’re hoping that, despite the small length of an EP, we’ve created a bit of a musical journey.
CC: Besides being a universal desire to fit in, does “COOL” have a backstory that you can share with us?
“COOL” was the first song we wrote as a band, so the entire process of writing it was wrought with experimentation. It saw quite a few versions, all based around that main musical motif. Funny enough, it’s a guitar lick, yet everyone assumes it’s a synthesizer.
CC: What is the writing process for your music like?
The process for writing changes from song to song; we like to do whatever is best for the particular piece of music we’re working on at the time. Everything we’ve done thus far is entirely self produced in our own recording studio.
CC: What is the most rewarding and challenging thing being a self-produced band?
It’s incredibly rewarding to have complete autonomy and authority over the music you’re writing; you don’t have to answer to anyone but yourself. On the other hand, though, when you’re the only one calling the shots, you’re limited to your own perspective and set of skills.
CC: How does the music you produce in studio translate to your live act?
Hopefully well. Our live show is a lot bigger and more raw than our studio recordings; the use of live guitars and drums brings a different sort of energy than our records have.
CC: Where do you hope this EP will take you?
We’d like to think that we take our music places, not the other way around. We’re excited to bring this EP to the stage and share it with anyone we can, and hopefully that’s as many people as possible.
CC: Is there anything else you’d like to say to your fans or anyone at all?
