Misterwives and Lawrence Fill DC With the “Sounds of Summer”

The Sounds of Summer tour made a stop in DC this past week, and with it being a gorgeous sunny day outside of The Anthem, everything about it was perfect! This show was all about the perfect blend of funky, soul music and upbeat, pop music to get everyone in that blissful summer mood, so it’s only fitting that the day just happened to reflect that!

Winnetka Bowling League opened up the show for the night. Right off the bat, they got the crowd energized with their electric performance and great vibes. Playing through their songs, “Kombucha“, “Slow Dances“, and “CVS“, people loved the trio right away! Lead singer, Matthew Koma joked at one point, “are you excited for Harry Styles?!” to which the crowd (naturally) cheered very loudly. Then he said “Okay! But he’s not here, we are!” and delved into their next song. With their great music and humor, they were quite the memorable opener!

It was time for the first of the headliners to hit the stage! Lawrence came out to roaring cheers from the crowd, every member of the band bouncing all over the place and getting people to dance. Lead singers Gracie and Clyde Lawrence dazzled the audience with the blend of their vocals as they opened with their song “More“.

Their songs “False Alarms” and “Shot” were especially popular with fans! During the former they had their trumpet player Marc rap Jon Bellion’s verse, getting everyone in the venue to wave their hands around. They even performed an unreleased song to the crowd, titled “23”. And naturally, fans were very excited to get a taste of some new music!

They brought an actual bucket out onstage to pick slips of paper out to decide which songs they would cover, tonight’s songs being “With a Little Help From My Friends” by The Beatles and “It’s Gonna Be Me” by *NSYNC. And with the latter song, you know the crowd was deafening when they got to sing along to the titular lyric.

Their strings and brass sections were a hit with the crowd in particular, doing headstands, limbo with their instruments, and all sorts of entertaining things while the lead singers did their thing. Closing out their set with “Don’t Lose Sight“, everyone both on and off the stage were jumping around and singing along.

And last, but certainly not least, Misterwives came out onstage! Opening up their set with “find my way home” and “why why why“, the band had people grinning ear to ear with their high energy. Performing a badass mashup of “over the rainbow” and “Oh Love“, the transition between the two songs had the crowd roaring as the band went back and forth.

When they played their old song “Vagabond“, lead singer Mandy Lee reminisced on how 15-year-old her would never believe her life and that she gets to play that song at a venue like this. As if emotions weren’t running high enough, they went straight into “stepped on a bee“, their first song released independent from a label. The band was overwhelmed from the support, grinning widely as the crowd was cheering for them as loud as possible.

One of the most memorable parts of their set was when they covered No Doubt’s “Just A Girl“. With the screen behind them saying ‘BANS OFF OUR BODIES’, the crowd goes crazy! Mandy was running across the stage, getting people to chant “I’m just a girl” and “fuck you I’m a girl”.

Their set was coming to a close, and Misterwives still had a couple more songs to give! “SUPERBLOOM” was next, and what a song to see performed live! Everyone in the crowd was singing along to the lyrics “I deserve congratulations”, and Mandy even split the crowd down the middle and got each side to sing the lyrics! And finally, they closed out with “Our Own House“, all the fans in the venue singing along even louder than Mandy!

But the night wasn’t over yet! To everyone’s delight, both Misterwives and Lawrence came back out onstage for one final song together, and what better song for these two hot-footed bands to perform together than “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” by Whitney Houston! The entire venue was singing and dancing along, and the energy in the room was palpable. This was truly the perfect way to end off this amazing show.
