Matt and Kim Present: THE MATT AND KIM TOUR Feat. Matt and Kim at Detroit’s historic St. Andrews Hall

The last time Matt and Kim came through Detroit I said exactly this, “Saying that Matt and Kim put on one of the most fun concerts might be an understatement…they may have turned everything up to 11…you never expect to see sex toys, flashing, and blow-up dolls floating around the crowd.” Alas, Matt and Kim set off for their first tour in four years bringing the Matt and Kim Present: THE MATT AND KIM TOUR Feat. Matt and Kim to Detroit’s historic St. Andrews Hall and (man, that’s a lot of and’s) some things don’t change, but they sure as hell can get weirder and better and different every single time. This time around these two turned it up to 12.

Matt and Kim took the stage with Matt jumping and hyping the crowd while throwing a few t-shirts into the strobe light filled audience while Kim danced and flailed her arms like whoa. A minute later the duo took to their seats and the beats began, another 30 seconds and Kim was already standing atop her drum set banging her sticks together and screaming at the crowd. From here on out it is near non-stop music and laughs thanks to a handful of interludes between tracks.

During one of the interludes between “Cameras,” “Now,” and “Good ol’ Fashioned Nightmare.” Kim brought out a handful of Olympic gold style medals while explaining to the crowd that they are for “not being afraid to get fucking weird,” then proceeding to call out people from crowd she has seen getting the weirdest passing the medals to those who earned them. Another memorable moment was Matt taking the time to explain how to hold up another member of the crowd by their legs and feet and that it may take multiple people to help stabilize someone but he wants to see people get in the air and they happily obliged!

After taking a crowd vote using a decibel meter to which Kim affectionately referred to as a, and I quote, “technical term dick boob meter,” to determine if the two would play “Lessons Learned” or “Good For Great” (LL won) they transitioned into a a rousing version of “Hey Now” with the venue still jumping like the show had just begun. Somewhere between confetti being thrown, the room filling with balloons, Kim pulled out (pun intended) the *ahem* heavy sticks to play the late building bass drum part of “Get It.” If you were looking for the non-emoji image from the headline, you’ll find it below.

All of Kim’s hard work undoubtedly would make even the most in-shape person thirsty which is why immediately finishing up the previously mentioned song she needed a beer. A beer that could only be retrieved via a crowd surf! Kim jumped off stage and into the crowed working her way to the bar stage right ultimately returning to her kit having hardly spilled a drop!

Talking to the crowd again before playing what is arguably the duo’s biggest hit, “Daylight,” they spoke of how the song was written in Matt’s childhood bedroom and that nobody was supposed to ever hear it, but someone somewhere did and it changed their lives forever taking another moment to give a genuine thank you to their fans.

Slowing things down for the first time all night Matt and Kim both made their way into the middle of the floor telling story of how for the first 15 years they made music they had a deal to not make any love songs, but at one point that changed and the song “Happy If You’re Happy” came out of that. The best friend, couple, band sang to one another and those all around them lit by the disco ball hanging above. This. Was. Awesome.

The show wrapped up with even more balloons and blow-up dolls along with a inflatable duck raft and all the confetti you could shake a stick at with the final song be “Let’s Go.” Matt and Kim danced some more like when our night first started, waving to everyone in attendance and giving one another a big’ol hug and kiss. It was another exceptional night with these fantastic electro-pop-punk rockers and I am already looking forward to what will happen on the next tour these two put on.
